REVIEW: Masumi: Blades of Sin (Issue 3 of 4: Sea of Trees)
Writer: Joe Tyler
Artist: Sergio Osuna
Colors: Francesca Zambon
Letters: Jim Campbell
Editor: Pat Shand
Publisher: Zenescope Entertainment with Grimm Fairy Tales
Masumi Yamomoto is a woman out of her time. After a battle against evil left her trapped in a hellish dimension for almost two hundred years, she returned to Earth and attempted to start a new life in a new world. However, Masumi“s past eventually caught up to her, and the man she loved was killed by a powerful demon called Legion. Masumi defeated the demon, but at a cost ”“ Legion is now trapped within her samurai swords, and she is bound by the laws of the Yamamoto Clan to ensure that the evil spirit never escapes. This is her story…
Previously, Masumi returned to Japan and discovered that the Yakuza is targeting her cousin, Mei, in hopes of exploiting her family“s artifacts. When Mei and her fiancé, Hiroto, refuse the Yakuza, they send their enforcer, ryujin, to murder Hiroto.
First, let me say that I really appreciate when I come in the middle of a story, and there“s a prologue to tell me what has happened thus far. I love that! If you expect to attract readers as you continue to write a story and continue a plot, slap one of these bad boys in the beginning so I know what I missed out on. Don“t leave your potential readers in the dark!
I“ve been a fan of Grimm Fairy Tales for a while, and this new series “Masumi”“ is no exception. It even has the tagline artwork that GFT is known for. And that“s something I can appreciate.
The story is very rich. I can tell that Joe Tyler is thinking ahead, leaving room to continue the story beyond this 4-series shot, which is very smart. I even like the way Masumi breaks the third wall a little bit, showing some humor in such a cruel, serious world. Even her sword, Legion, has a sarcastic undertone.
I don“t have any bad things to say about this comic…however, I don“t really have any great things to say either. All in all, Masumi is a solid one-shot. I would definitely give the entire series a read to see how everything goes from beginning to end.
