First, an important editor“s note: You should read this comic before reading Aquaman # 38. This issue begins with the Queen behind bars, about to be thrown to the wolves, or wolf in this case, at the strand arena, Xebel. Leron offers her a weapon, a lance but she refuses, stating that his trident can cause storms and a lance won“t do her any good.
The Creative Team:
Dan Abnett brings us a queen at her most vulnerable in this final issue of the miniseries. Tula is defiant that no matter who wins the fight Mera is in, she will not marry Nereus. A political union that promises to unite Atlantis and Xebel. Abnett gets the important exposition across during the battle between Mera and Orm Marius in an extremely well-done fight scene. Pacing is important in a good fight scene; a lot of story tellers seem to forget that as they mush too much on to one or two pages. Great stuff includes the motivation behind why she fights what appears to be a losing battle and the gritty determination she shows to the bitter end of this fight.
Lan Medina and Norm Rapmund give us some dynamite pages in this final issue, their art alone is well worth the cover price. Orm“s overconfidence shows as does Mera“s confidence as handled by these two Atlantean illustrators applying their craft. Highlights include the final splash at the end of the battle and the opening face-off between the antagonist and protagonist.
In Conclusion:
A good issue and a satisfying conclusion (well, sort of) to this mini-series. It“s a story that“ been done before, but then again every story has been done before. It“s not going to stand out as a classic or anything, but the pacing is good and it“s a nice read over all. Will Mera be victorious? What do you think? *** (8.0 rating.)
