REVIEW: Midnighter #4
Midnighter #4
Written by Steve Orlando
Art by Stephen Mooney
Colours by Romulo Fajaroo Jr.
Letters by Tom Napolitano
Let’s judge this book by its cover…Midnighter and dick Grayson outside castle Dracula. It’s not great but it’s far from terrible. The art is good and the poses are fine. It’s just a little lacking.
The facts are these… Midnighter has been robbed. His god garden, home to universe threatening weapons has been broken into and most of the weapons stolen. Now he needs to find them before they are sold to the highest bidder. Joining with Grayson he’s headed to Russia to locate one of these weapons.
Now if you’re sitting comfortably we can begin… Moscow and three privileged guys are headed to an underground club to kill a monster, the owner has a weapon midnighter is looking for and is using to create vampires no less. Then selling their deaths to the rich. The boys stake the creature that is begging for its life. Midnighter and Grayson are having coffee with a guy who knows what they want and tells them of the boys that now the location of the club. Midnighter is a big fan of Dick, pun intended. He especially loves hearing him scream out his name as he does in the next scene. The boys are in a steam room gloating when Midnighter and Grayson show up and beat the boys for the location. Finding the club they bust in and make light work of the security. Midnighter is attacked by the owner who believes himself a true vampire. He’s been using a the weapon to turn innocent people into vampires for the wealthy to kill. But unfortunately for him Midnighter knows exactly how to kill vampires. Having stopped the head honcho but not the boss or having retrieved the weapon Midnighter and Grayson make a plan to go after him and stop him for good. What they don’t know is that the boss wants an army of Midnighter’s and is planning on hunting them down first. To be continued.
The sexual tension between these two floats off the page. It’s funny to read. The action scenes are well done and the writing is top-notch. The overall story is very run of the mill so far. Midnighter is the street version of Batman, he WILL kill without blinking. Don’t cross him.
That’s gonna leave a mark… It’s a teen+ book which means it’s not for kids and it’s really night. From threatening to see how many hot coals he can fit inside a guy to cutting a guy’s face in half. It’s violent.
The good, the bad and the star rating…
The good – The chemistry between these two is brilliant. I hope Grayson stays on for a while. The tongue in cheek naughty one liners are great.
The bad – The art in places let it down at times.
The stars – A very strong 3 stars for this one.
