I used to be a huge power rangers fanatic as a child. That being said, I wasn’t able to reignite that same old flame read this issue. Seeing Goldarr (the campiest and my favorite to poke fun at) and the gang was fun though. Especially with the nostalgia it brings.
Getting to what I enjoyed the most out of this issue first. The artwork fits the theme very well. It’s nice, sharp cartoon-ish lines are very pleasing to the senses and are more than I expected coming into it. That said I don’t even know what I expected anymore. But it was definitely more campy than the clean art seen here.
It’s dialogue and story has the campy feel of the old show all intact. For better or worse. Taking this review in a personal manner I couldn’t read it without hearing the shows voices in my head. Especially with Goldarr. I could only hear my funny impersonations of him when reading. Which added to the fun but sometimes felt flat.
I’ve only read this issue of the Power Rangers series, but it was entertaining and I never felt too out of the loop. Definitely not a self-contained story but keeps a good pace. This may have not been the best jumping on point. So if you’re a fan of the series, love the campiness and don’t mind picking up some back issues. It’s probably gonna be fun ride. 3/5
