Review: Mr. Beaver #1
The world’s most powerful crime organization, The Twelve, had managed to evade justice for far too long and, in desperation, the police reach out to the one individual who just might be able to turn things around. Enter special agent Mr. Beaver, returning to his hometown fresh from the Alpha Academy and itching to take down the dark underbelly… after taking care of his own rumbling belly, of course.
Chilean comic book creator, Pablo Verdugo Munoz who has been self-publishing the book series Mr Beaver for some time now.
Mr. Beaver, is a Special Agent, who has sworn to stamp out all criminals within Marmot City, who has been paired up with with Detective Kage, a rookie so that she can learn some of his special skills. The main Villain is a mysterious masked man known as Richard, a has  mastered a coveted skill known as Theos Lampsi, allows one to deflect bullets.
The Dialogue (Nicole D’andria) while towing the line of allowable ridiculousness of funny, and not all around terrible, utilized a trope that is a pet peeve of mine like But why me? I’m just a…” which is just lazy, and wasn’t important to the narrative.
Unfortunately, Munoz thus far didn’t provide much background on what makes Mr. Beaver tick. All we really know so far is that he went to a academy for Bad-asses, and that he is obsessed with taking down the Twelve for some reason.
The art by Pablo Munoz bounces leans very hard into very dark tones that are very reminiscent of the Volume one Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle stories. But ultimately the panels leave you saying under your breath “dag, what just happened?”.
Some Thoughts: Mr. Beaver, is just perfectly built for a Franchise opportunity, it just needs more work on the story to set it up for the future. I would love to see this as an animated feature of some sort. How long am I going to have to wait for a Mr. Beaver Action Figure? Is Mr. Beaver, a beaver or a Marmot? If he is a just a beaver, where are all the marmots?
SCORE: 4 stars out of 5.
