REVIEW: Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook # 1

Dodgy86 in the mix bringing you Mycroft Holmes # 1 by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Raymond Obstfeld with art by Joshua Cassara, Luis Guerrero and letters by Simon Bowland.

Simply titled the Apocalypse Handbook and rightfully so as the story begins in a museum in Victorian London (the year is 1874) when a pair of young delinquents find an unusually looking object that grabs their attention and they then discover what this device is capable of and the results are somewhat apocalyptic.

The characteristic of Mycroft Holmes as depicted by Sir Conan Arthur Doyle is a problem solver and has intelligence that exceeded his younger brother Sherlock – yet did not have the ambition of field work and was out-of-shape. Kareem’s Mycroft is wisecracking womanizer and playboy, he is also an energetic go-getter who readily makes fun of Sherlock’s famously odd behavior (Sherlock does appears in a few pages of this book).

In Cambridge University where Mycroft is a member, he is known as an outcasts by his peers as well as the Professor for being outspoken. He cannot help it, however his views land him in all sorts of trouble.

The conclusion will surprise you!

Being a massive basketball fan and following Kareem Abdul-Jabbars’ career, I had to double-take this and I am impressed. This tale does feel it is based in the 1800’s and the pacing is very well structured and the art by Cassara and Guerrero looks stunning especially the coloring. It is an eye-grabber and I was not disappointed.

There is much more to deliver later on considering it is the first issue and there is action from the opening pages and the humour is welcoming especially the relationship between the Holmes brothers.

I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more, fans of TV’s Elementary and Sherlock will enjoy this also. Do ya’self a favor and check it out!
