REVIEW: PRINCELESS: MAKE YOURSELF #1

Story by Jeremy Whitley, art by Emily Martin, colours/letters by Brett Grunig, published by Action Labs

So you look at your list of review copies and try to find something that looks appealing after your umpteenth twelve-hour shift. Some unfathomable thing from Image full of characters whose names begin with “Z” and torturing children, some other thing about molesting children, a collection of insipid nonsense from the big two…

Action Labs it is then. Never read Princeless before really wish I had though. Not 100% sure what’s going on but you pick things up sharpish. The highlight of the comic being; dwarves getting ready to attack a dragon in a snowstorm. Peter Jackson should really be taking notes because this comic manages to instill enough character and charm into a bunch of dwarves in one twenty-six page comic than he did in a ten-hour snore fest.

There’s two stories woven together, the aforementioned dragon attack and then two couples meeting and joining up, won’t spoil it but both are given ample space to feel fleshed out and both serve the book as a whole, one being action and humour, the other more character and plot. The dialogue never gets too wordy and exposition, when needed, is woven naturally into the story.

The art has the feel of Elf Quest though with a more animated style. There’s a nice use of camera angles, body posture, facial expressions and panel layout to show off any action and keep the more script heavy story visually interesting. All the characters stand out visually and there’s real effort gone into body language as another tool in the story telling toolbox.

My only problem is my boring review. It’s another great empowering comic from a company that deserves more attention, go buy it.
