I mourned the departure of Roc Upchurch. I mourned him until the ninth issue of “Rat Queens”. I’ve loved Stjepan Sejic since “Death Vigil”but I was really not ready to give up the perfectly expressive, neat, hilarious style and paneling of Upchurch. That is, my people, until the tenth issue of “Rat Queens”.
First: the art. The art is beautiful. Sejic illustrates beautifully and it works for “Rat Queens”. The dewy beauty of his art highlights the magic of that ratty world; and is it just me or did this issue seem more magical and emotional than the previous ones? which leads me to…
Second: the writing. We dive into some real heavy shit in this one. Hannah’s asshole exterior, Violet’s and Dave the Orc’s affections for eachother, Dee’s personal and complicated spiritual grapples, Betty’s…fuckin adorableness…it seems like this issue touches upon very human stuff that we as a Rat Queens audience are not used to.
The whole experience is wonderful. I fuckin love these crazy broads and all but sometimes it feels like they are too cool to be real. Obviously they are mage elves and smidgens so they are probably not real on our plane of existence but like, one likes to think humanoid beings are humanoid in mind; and this is our confirmation.
