Review: Rat Queens #19

At the point when last we saw the Rat Queens they were setting out on a quest to discover a weapon with the Power of Index, when they were intercepted by the minions of King Gary.  Dee of Palisades receives a warning from a bizarre voice caution her that there are ramifications for what she is doing, and not to uses her powers or a  ‘reign of violence’, or else something really bad will happen.

In the current issue of Rat Queens #19 The Queens infiltrate the village of Gary, in order to extricate it from the rule of  King Gary. King Gary , who continues to be  ultimate representation of leaders that ‘fail up’, continues to thwart the Rat Queens despite their talents.  The interesting thing is that King Gary, doesn’t even really do anything diabolical to capture them.  Ultimately, it’s a combination of the their personal individual shortcomings and the institutional system that befalls the Rat Queens.

Best Monologue: : “Not even smashable*.  Even for a living potato head on a pillow.” -King Gary.

Best Panel: This is the 1st appearance of  a Professor Cornelius Fudgebottom III.  His entrance is an absolute Deus Ex Nihlo.

The art for Rat queens continues to be the center of gravity for Rat Queens.  In this particular issue I don’t know whats more disturbing, the violent toiling of the Rat Queens, or the Blatant semi nudity of King Gary.  Either way the creative team with art by Priscilla Petraites continues to put on a clinic on wonderful layouts.

Rat Queens is guilty pleasure that on the surface allows one to escape into a a world full of colorful female protagonist, that aren’t afraid to crack the occasional crude joke, but subversively it is an exercise into a process of political sensitization that forces its readers through the on page confrontations to , contemplate, and assess their own political views.
