REVIEW: Raven #2

Raven has always been one of my favorite comic book characters, both for her attitude but also for her amazing design and costume. When I saw that DC was putting out a brand new series for her, I got that weird feeling of both excitement and apprehension that every superfan gets. It“s a mix of “Yes, that“s so awesome!”“ and “Good lord, please don“t fudge it up!”“

This only being issue number two, we“re not that far into the series yet, but this issue shows that the story is moving along at a nice pace. Raven has moved in with her aunt and is attending high school as my favorite weirdo loner kid. A girl from her school has gone missing, and Raven is in the center of the weird happenings that are taking place. There is something out there, but even with her super senses, she doesn“t know what it is.

Marv Wolfman“s writing is dark where is needs to be, and light-hearted where it serves its purpose. Raven is by nature a mysterious person, and the fact that she lives divided between her human-self and her soul-self, it is easy to muddle the two. However, Marv is doing a great job at distinguishing the two sides of her without giving either too much attention.

Now the artwork…I need it tattooed on me. Seriously, it“s insanely gorgeous, and so good to see Raven in her full birdy and badass form. She has always been one of the most eye-catching heroines to ever grace the pages of a comic book, and Alison Borges has talent that is beyond this world. Blond fulfills the very important spot as colorist and I was left speechless at how breathtaking the colors flowed across the pages. It has been a long time since I“ve seen color work this astonishing, and there is absolutely nothing that anyone could have done to make it better. I don“t believe in using the word “perfect”“ lightly, but that“s exactly what this artwork in this series is.

The cover is, at first glance, pretty nice, but what makes it pop is the background. Kids, never forget the importance of a good background because in this case, it really tied the whole image together. Mike McKone and Rod Reis really set the tone and mood for the book, and it paid off. Also, I want Raven“s outfit. Someone hook me up with full Raven attire for the rest of my life please!

So it“s pretty obvious that I am infatuated with this book, but who wouldn“t be? It“s amazing, and DC should be proud of themselves.
