Review: Regression #6

We“re only a few weeks into 2018 but I feel comfortable saying this seems like it“s going to be a year crammed full of really good horror comic books. The trend started mid 2017 and seems to be picking up steam. Regression #6 (Image Comics) is one of the series that seems to be reaching its stride and will be one to keep an eye on as it continues to progress.

Writer Cullen Bunn certainly has proven his horror story chops in his previous offerings such as Harrow County (Highly Recommended), and he does not disappoint in his first book for Image. In this sixth issue, we find the main character Adrian trapped as a prisoner of an extremist group who has kidnapped him. They are hell-bent on forcing him to bring forth memories from his past lives. As this is going on, Adrian“s girl Molly is working with Detective Graymercy, (who is on a leave of absence due to his recent injury), to find him. Molly drives the detective to visit an occultist and try to have him decipher the symbol that Graymercy feels is a key to the investigation.

Bunn has proven his mastery of the horror genre, and this ongoing comic, no doubt, cements his standing as a modern titan. Working on this book with the artistic team of Danny Luckert (art) and Marie Enger (colors/letters) he has found a partnership that complements his writing style like a well fitted glove. I would love to call out the tremendous coloring achievement with the use of shading and lighting of the panels specifically of Adrian in his cell. Each panel is highly unique and shows a keen eye to detail and imagination.
