Rigby and Mordecai“s wishes keep spiraling out of control, but a trip to Genie Beach might offer a solution! Or, um, it might make everything way, way worse.

I have to admit that Regular Show is one of my guilty pleasures. I was first introduced to it by my then 9 year old daughter and thought it was the stupidest thing I“d ever seen until a couple episodes in, and I was hooked. While most of the stories in the show are ridiculously out there, it is tons of fun, with humor that works on multiple levels and for audiences of all ages.

A couple of months back, I picked up a couple issues of BOOM! Studios Regular Show ongoing at the behest of the kids and we“ve been enjoying reading these together ever since. In the current arc, Rigby and Mordecai are granted wishes by a genie, only to realize that those wishes didn“t come true as they had hoped. Rigby is stuck inside Benson“s head – he“s a giant gumball machine if you don“t follow the series – and Mordecai can“t enjoy any fun activities because his huge bulging biceps cause him to break everything. Issue #19 keeps exploring the consequences of their wishes, ultimately leading them to an island being used by genies for their spring break party. One final wish by a band of hooligans that have been defacing the park where Rigby and Mordecai work, and EVERYONE on the island is granted their own genie lamp, which I“m sure will lead to even more ridiculousness in the next issue.

Writer Nick Sumida does a terrific job at capturing the same charm and humor which makes the television show so endearing. Seeing this arc play over multiple issues took a little bit getting used to since each episode of the tv show is generally divided into two short and generally unrelated stories, but it“s nice to see the show“s format being tweaked for comic book readers. Sumida“s characterizations are spot on and all the characters talk and act as should be expected.

Allison Strejlau“s art in this series is killer, and I may actually prefer her rendering of the characters a little more than those of the television series. It still possesses the same cartoonish charm, but with much more rawness, giving some of the characters a slightly more crazed look which I thoroughly enjoyed.

If you“re a fan of Regular Show, or are just looking for a fun book to read with your kids, I highly recommend you pick up this series.
