Review: Road Trip to Hell #2

Synopsis:

Issue # 2 opens with star taking on der Fuhrer himself! Yes, age-old nemesis to all things good Adolf Hitler is back! But just when she thinks she has the drop on him, another Nazi jumps to his rescue. Star finds herself strapped to the bed and a prisoner of the Nazis, who want to do despicable things to her body…while she’s still alive! Can Francis and Joan of Arc arrive in time to save Star?

The Creative Team:

Nicole D’Andria opens this issue with a bang! I’m loving the strong contrasts between good and evil here. Adolf Hitler may be an overused antagonist through the years, but D’Andria manages to give us a few more twists to the evil that was Nazi Germany. When Frances and Joan arrive, they’re stopped by a cop that wants to radio his captain, but to show a sense of urgency, the author has Joan tackle the officer and render him weaponless. They have no time to waste and she does this through his protests. Joan informs him that Star may already be tortured or killed. D’Andrea knows how to build suspense in a comic book tale! Great stuff includes Frances discovering his former boss in the morgue and Star proving she’s no damsel in distress by defending herself against the Nazi doctor.

Marco Maccagni once again delivers the goods. This is an awesome story and his slightly cartoonish illustrations get better with every issue. He knows how to help Nicole’s words in moving this story panel for panel. This is a superior comic book creating team and his take on Adolf Hitler is masterfull. Highlights include the splash where Star incapacitates he nazi captor and the final page with a surprise element.

In Conclusion:

This is one of the most original comics I’ve read in a long time. It’s whacky and horrific at the same time. In this universe that she’s created there doesn’t seem to be any gray areas. Good is in sharp contrast to evil. Using Adolf Hitler as an antagonist may seem, at first, to be another exercise in overdone cliche’s in storytelling, but it’s working so well that I can’t see any other antagonist for this story to use. I’m loving this awesome tale and the twist at the end of this issue goes to solidify my point. ***1/2 (8.6 rating)
