REVIEW: Scooby Apocalypse #1
G“Day Crusaders,
This is Dodgy86 in the mix bringing you Scooby Apocalypse # 1 by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis with art by Howard Porter and Hi-Fi.
This is not how I remember those meddlin“ Kids!! Velma is a scientist who has lost the trust of the company she works for; she feels it is out of touch and Velma asks Daphne and Fred (aspiring journalist and her camera man) to share the story to a wider audience. Before too long we meet Shaggy, a colleague of Velma“s, he is the handler for dogs that are experimented on to form the smart dog. And we meet Scooby Doo, he is Shaggy“s best friend and the original prototype.
What do our heroes find that“s of concern and how does it affect their world? Read it and find out.
This book is the brainchild of Jim Lee, Co-Publisher of DC Comics, whose name is at the top of the credits on the cover. However, I thought he had more input than just the concept.
This is one of the new books based on the classic Hanna Barbera cartoons, given the DC look that I was looking forward to; Scooby Doo is one of my favourite cartoons of all time.
I didn“t expect a lot to be honest; its not the first time we“ve seen a change from the classic. The movies in the early 2000’s had given us a modern look. And this book has used some of the movie“s flavour, for example: Velma“s hidden smart = sexiness, Daphne“s kickass/badass and Fred“s more brawn and less brains. Shaggy is often seen as the idiot in the group but often throws words of wisdom in critical timing, and Scooby is just Scooby.
This story shows the readers how the characters meet for the first time, giving brief origin stories of each character with subtlety. I enjoyed the explanation as to why Scooby speaks, thinks and acts like a human ”“ I did not expect it, which is pleasing because it worked for the story.
Overall, the first issue provides no punches in terms of action. It is filled with dialogue to introduce each character, to those who watched the TV like I did. Keep an open mind as it is new and different in appearances ”“ this is not a kids book and it is stimulating for adults. For those too young, this is like Supernatural and the X-Files where the heroes will set out to solve mysteries.
Do ya’self and check it out!
