REVIEW: Sinergy #3

With its third issue, things are really starting to pick up in Sinergy as Jess is finally coming to grips with the world she has discovered exists in the shadows. There is a flashback scene showing us her first demon kill which plays a key role in the rest of the story. Not only do we get to see how Jess“ new role as Seer is changing her, but also how it is affecting the world around her.

As it turns out, Jess is not very good at demon-slaying, and why should she be? She“s brand new at it. Seeing her argue with her demon dog pet about how to dispose of a dead body was hilariously creepy and a great example of the level of thought and humor that the writers are putting into this series. Oeming and Soma are doing a terrific job showing her character growth from the first issue until now and it“s refreshing to read.

The introduction of a new group of seers which help Jess slay a group of stripper demons (seriously) is a nice touch. After all, Jess“ ex-boyfriend Leaf and his crew are preparing an interdimensional portal for an all out demonic invasion of our world, and there is no way Jess could handle it on her own.

While the art may not be to everyone“s liking, I am digging Oeming“s style. It is very cartoony which may turn some people off, but it“s a perfect fit for this type of story. Sure, some of the topics are rather serious – family dynamics, demons, death, the usual – but Sinergy never really takes itself seriously, and it shows in both the art and writing.

Overall, another great issue to a serious that I am really enjoying, and I cannot wait to see how the developments which surfaced in this serious propel the serious forward into uncharted territory.
