Review: Sparrowhawk TPB

Sparrowhawk is located in England during the Victorian era and tells about the life of Artemisa, a girl whose past is kept in mystery, has a love relationship with her sister Caroline however with her stepmother their relationship is bitter, perhaps the death of Elizabeth, Caroline and Artemisa’s sister hardened her heart. One day Artemisa’s life changes completely since her stepmother arranged a marriage, the chosen one was Elizabeth however her premature death meant a change of plans, being now the chosen Artemisa, things are not going well with the finances of the Family and marriage would bring a good dowry in addition to being for the stepmother a golden opportunity to get rid of Artemisa.

When everything seemed inevitable and while she was putting on the wedding dress originally made for Elizabeth, a strange event occurs, Artemisa is taken by the hand by a dark and malevolent figure and being thrown into a strange world on the other side of the mirror, the strange figure It would take the form of Artemisa with the intention of destroy and rule the human world.

Meanwhile Artemisa wakes up in Faerie, a fairy world, which far from what the tales tell us, is a dark and cruel world where only the strongest survive, Crispin a magical being is the one who receives Artemisa in Faerie, but Crispin has a dark nature and manipulates Artemisa with the promise of making her return to her world, so a dark pact between Artemisa and Crispin is sealed, in Faerie everything has a price and the pact would cost Artemisa a recall.

As I mentioned before Faerie is a tough and hostile world and in order to survive hard decisions must be made, in the case of Artemisa to get back to her world she must kill, for Crispin killing does not mean much since in its nature the rule is to kill or to be killed, but for Artemisa it is something horrible, the confrontation with a Unseelie will force her to fill her hands with blood, the death of the Unseelie will cause Artemisa’s body to change and thus fairy wings will emerge from her back and will be the beginning of the hard mission of returning home, a path that will inevitably be full of violence and blood.

As Artemisa advances on her return home she discovers that she was thrown into Faerie by the Unseelie Queen and discovers the Queen’s dark intentions behind everything, so the return to her home becomes urgent, but every death caused by the Artemisa’s sword has a cost, every time she loses a little of her humanity, she kills and murders beings that in her opinion are evil, but she started to enjoy to kill, Artemisa doesn’t consider that they are beings that respond to a nature and their function is to maintain a balance of life in Faerie, Artemisa with her actions took place in that balance, she become a predator and without knowing it, that pact made with Crispin that seemed to cost her a small memory will weigh her in the future, as Crispin told her: When you pull a thread of the tapestry, much unravels.

I must admit that I took my time to write this review, this story deserved to devote my full attention, really not all the time you have in your hands a work of this magnitude, I love the fantasy genre and this comic is one of those where barely you started to read the first page you must read the whole book, Delilah Dawson really created a wonderful and dark world of fairies and Matias Balsa’s art with his touch of art noveau that reminds us of the magical art of Aubrey Beardsley give us a spectacular comic, I don’t have more to say, I just loved it.

Sparrowhawk se sitÃºa en Inglaterra durante la Ã©poca Victoriana y narra sobre la vida de Artemisa, una chica cuyo pasado se mantiene en misterio, tiene una relaciÃ³n de amor con su hermana Caroline sin embargo con su madrastra su relaciÃ³n es dura, quizÃ¡s la muerte de Elizabeth hermana de Caroline y Artemisa endureciÃ³ su corazÃ³n. Un dÃa la vida de Artemisa cambia por completo ya que su madrastra arreglÃ³ un matrimonio, la elegida fue la fallecida Elizabeth sin embargo su prematura muerte significÃ³ un cambio de planes, siendo ahora la elegida Artemisa, las cosas no andan bien con las finanzas de la familia y el matrimonio aportarÃa una buena dote ademÃ¡s que para la madrastra es una oportunidad dorada para deshacerse de ella.

Cuando todo parecÃa inevitable y mientras se probaba el blanco vestido de matrimonio originalmente para Elizabeth, un extraÃ±o suceso ocurre, Artemisa es tomada de la mano por una oscura y malÃ©vola figura mientras es arrojada hacia un extraÃ±o mundo al otro lado del espejo, la extraÃ±a figura tomarÃa la forma de Artemisa con la intenciÃ³n de destruir y gobernar el mundo humano.

Mientras tanto Artemisa despierta en Faerie, un mundo de hadas, el cual lejos de los que los cuentos nos dicen, es un oscuro y cruel mundo donde los mÃ¡s fuertes sobreviven, Crispin un ser mÃ¡gico es quien recibe a Artemisa en Faerie, pero Crispin tiene una naturaleza oscura y manipula a Artemisa con la promesa de hacerla regresar a su mundo, por tanto un oscuro pacto entre Artemisa y Crispin es sellado, en Faerie todo tiene un precio y el pacto le costarÃa a Artemisa un recuerdo.

Como mencionÃ© antes Faerie es un mundo duro y hostil y para sobrevivir se deben tomar decisiones difÃciles, en el caso de Artemisa para lograr regresar a su mundo debe matar, para Crispin, matar no siginifica mucho ya que en su naturaleza la regla es matar o ser matado, pero para Artemisa es algo horrible, el enfrentamiento con un Unseelie la obligarÃ¡ a llenar sus manos de sangre, la muerte del Unseelie harÃ¡ que el cuerpo de Artemisa cambie y asÃ unas alas de hada emergerÃ¡n de su espalda y serÃ¡ el inicio de la dura tarea de regresar a su hogar, camino que inevitablemente estarÃ¡ lleno de violencia y sangre.

A medida que Artemisa avanza en su regreso a casa descrubre que fue arrojada a Faerie por la Reina Unseelie y descubre las oscuras intenciones de la Reina detrÃ¡s de todo, por tanto el regreso a su hogar se hace urgente, pero cada muerte provocada por la espada de Artemisa tiene un costo, cada vez pierde un poco de su humanidad, ella mata y asesina a seres que en su parecer son malvados, sin embargo son seres que responden a una naturaleza y simplemente responden a mantener un equilibrio de la vida en Faerie, Artemisa con sus accioes tomÃ³ lugar en ese equilibrio y sin saberlo, ese pacto hecho con Crispin que parecÃa costarle un pequeÃ±o recuerdo le pesarÃ¡ en un futuro, como le dijo Crispin: Cuando halas un hilo del tapiz, mucho se desenreda.

Debo reconocer que me tomÃ© mi tiempo para escribir esta reseÃ±a, esta historia merecÃa dedicar toda mi atenciÃ³n, realmente no todo el tiempo se topa uno ante una obra de esta magnitud, me fascina el gÃ©nero de fantasÃa y este cÃ³mic es uno de esos donde apenas lees la primera pÃ¡gina debes leer todo el libro, Delilah Dawson realmente creÃ³ un maravilloso y oscuro mundo de hadas y el arte de Matias Balsa con su toque de art noveau que hace recordar al mÃ¡gico arte de Aubrey Beardsley nos brindan un espectacular comic, no tengo mÃ¡s que decir, simplemente lo amÃ©.
