Review: Spider-Man and the League of Realms #3

“Die a thousand deaths, you infected goat rectum!” – Screwbeard

Synopsis:

Thor has taken command of the counter-strike to Malekith, who, along with his allies, are trying to gain control of Midgard (Earth) the ninth and final realm. Thor appointed Spider-Man with leading the league of realms to Africa to find the angel who is in charge of the occupation. The league was formed as Malekith’s reign was just beginning. What united them, despite their difficulties, was their intense hatred of the Elf King. Spider-Man has to convince them that a fellowship can be formed despite their differences. This takes place after War of the Realms # 4 and War Scrolls #3.

The Creative Team:

Sean Ryan piles on the excitement as Spider-Man sends his team to do battle with Kurse and her followers. Screwbeard distracts the main antagonist while the others scramble to carry out their plan. Ryan shows off Spider-Man’s skills as a leader as the plan unfolds, though not as smoothly as our heroes would have liked it too. Fernande has a vision which stops her in her tracks and jeopardizes the mission. The pacing is fantastic as this issue builds momentum to its ultimate climax. This comic is definitely a page turner and keeps you glued to the story. I really enjoyed the intensity of our heroes plight and couldn’t put this one down. Great Stuff includes the final confrontation with Kurse and our team’s self-realization of what they’re fighting for, it may not be what they thought it was initially.

Nico Leon and Marco Failla share the artistic chores and their styles are similar enough that the issue flows smoothly. We’re treated to some great illustrations of the varied characters and their races. It’s amazing how well the characters from different worlds blend in with each other and the artists take all of these personages seriously and ground them in realism. They’re a compelling group bent on retaking the land. Highlights include the opening with the creation of Kurse and the later splash of Kurse in disgrace.

In Conclusion:

It’s an issue on overload as our heroes desperately try to take out Kurse and regain the land. There is no room to let up and our heroes learn something new about themselves along the way. The stakes are deep and our heroes have to measure up to the challenge at hand. Will they be able to take out this latest threat in time? The battle may finish in this issue but the war has just begun. **** (9.3 rating)
