We find Star-Lord waking up in an old west hospital bed. He“s greeted by a strange alien woman named Chai“dra who protects the town but has her hands full in doing so. Outlaws come to town and tax the people and they“re tough so she doesn“t have much say in the matter. Other do gooder’s have tried and failed. Peter Quill gets wrapped up in the mess the only way Star-Lord can. By complete accident and misunderstanding. Also he“s trying to escape the westworld like planet, but his ship is busted. Twist Star-Lord“s conscience enough and he“ll always do the right thing though. Peter has a fourth wall relation with the reader. When he“s seeing stuff for the first time it“s like if we were in his shoes we would be making the same confusing looks and asking stupid but needed questions. Seeing aliens in a western style is quite epic and entertaining. Horses have four eyes, six shooters are laser guns, and mechanics work of spaceships in the background. I think it“s a lot of fun to mix some space stuff with some western drab. It makes it creatively colorful, almost steam punk like.
That is this comic. A creative, colorful, gritty, mysterious comic book. It“s great for an annual, answers some questions and is a nice treat from Marvel. It will be great for newer fans who perhaps have just seen the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie and will want to dive into the comic world. If you’re a long time reader you won“t want to miss this one either. It“s quite an interesting tale. You“ll start out with questions and end up building a time machine to the next comic release. Which one you ask? All of them. I reckon Star-Lord annual #1 gets five out of five stars!
