Review: Star Trek/Transformers #2

Synopsis:

I love how this title uses the animated version of both universes characters. There has never been a version of the animated Star Trek series (only fan produced stuff, not by a major studio) and I always thought there should have been a comic book series inspired by Star Trek’s animated series. I was about 12 when the show first came to NBC and I loved it! I had just come to the understanding that the live action shows I was viewing in syndication had been reruns and was aching for new Star Trek. Anyway, enough reminiscing. This issue begins on the planet Cygnus Seven. Spock, McCoy, and Scotty are discussing the pros and cons of awakening a giant robot that they had stumbled across.

The Creative Team:

Barber and Johnson capture the feel of both series quite well in this issue. From McCoy’s sarcastic wit to Optimus Primes gentle but firm nature in dealing with humans he’s not familiar with. The Vulcan mind meld with Optimus Prime is reminiscent of Spock’s mind meld with V’Ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and is revealing to both the humans and transformers. Another away team features Kirk, Sulu, and M’ress as they are being attacked by other Transformers who think they are the enemy. This brings up the action factor in this issue. The pacing is good and a lot has revealed about this mission in this issue. Great stuff includes M’ress having a good role, one of the characters created especially for the animated series finally getting good screen, or should I say page, time. and yet another episode where Kirk out-logics a computer, only in the form of a transformer.

The art is so spot on to both animated series that one would swear that they lifted cells from both shows to create this comic. This brings back so many memories that I think I’ll head to Netflix and re-watch those old animated shows. Highlights include the Decepticons on the hull of a familiar battle cruiser plus the obligatory fight between Transformers and Decepticons.

In Conclusion:

Another great team up between two awesome franchises I really enjoyed how this creative team has captured the feel for both animated series and brings them to life. Fans of both series should enjoy what IDW has done with these characters. The story is shaping up to be a classic and the reader will be left in anticipation for the next issue. ***1/2 (8.6 rating)
