Review: Star Wars #45
This issue begins with the obligatory scroll which tells us that our heroes are looking for a new star base after Queen Trios betrayed the Empire and gave the rebels a victory that they desperately needed. They decided on the water world of Mon Cala. They’re hoping to recruit that world’s leader to aid them in their fight against the Empire but he’s hesitant because he doesn’t want any more of the Empire’s wrath to be poured out on his people. and after the scroll, Han, Luke and Chewbacca are at Mess Hall IV on the Mako-Ta base. There they meet up with Leia and are working out the kinks in their situation and weather or not Mon Cala will be an appropriate base for the rebels.
The Creative Team:
Kieron Gillien brings us an issue of introspection and contemplation of the rebels next move. It’s not an action packed story, unusual for a Star Wars book, but it’s a necessary chapter after their previous unmitigated victory. We see old friends reunited and new soldiers brought into the fight. The feel is upbeat and optimistic, even if this worlds leader doesn’t decide to join with the rebels it’s not the end of the world. Great stuff includes Luke and Wedge rejoined and Princess Leia delivering her report to the other rebels on Mon Cala.
Salvador Larroca is one of the best Star Wars artists to ever draw our hero’s. they look so much like their actor counterparts that the art alone is worth the price of this issue. He captures our heroes perfectly with each emotion and feeling that they evoke. Highlights include the attempt to bring Leia into captivity with a certain fuzz ball interrupting the proceeding. And the shape shifter having a little “fun.”
In Conclusion:
As I said, not an action packed story but a satisfactory tale in its own right. It’s pacing is on par with a good Star Wars tale even if we don’t realize it until the end. Enough twists and turns give us a satisfactory climax which I really enjoyed as Princess Leia… to be continued. *** (8.2 rating)
