Review: Stranger Things Season 3

Before I begin, I do not know if it’s worth it to give the SPOILER ALERT waring about this review since the Internet itself has been very busy revealing key scenes, perhaps the fact that it is a series of Netflix already makes many assume that people should see a entire season in one night, anyway here comes… SPOILER ALERT.

We must recognize that Stranger Things is the media phenomenon of recent years, perhaps only surpassed by Game of Thrones, with the marked difference that the impact of Stranger Things has been perhaps more dramatic being Netflix is a streaming service with the possibility of cover a great amount of public thanks to the Internet.

Also how the series started is a great example of self-improvement, because the Duffer Bros. And their project were rejected many times until Netflix gave them the full confidence and the rest is history, the first season I think it will remain outstanding since it was a formula maybe used already in movies like The Goonies and series like Eerie Indiana, in the eighties a group of kids from a village have to solve mysterious incidents that occur without any explanation which was refreshing for a public, let’s say tired of pretentious and meaningless series, but that magic would not last long, season 2 left the introduction of memorable characters like Bob and new characters of which we would see some again in Season 3 and others that might reappear for the eventual Season 4 but little contributed to the continuity of the series.

The season 3 was expected by many and even beat some Netflix records but the magic is still lost and is something that is inevitable, the Duffer brothers knows that and I think we could have Stranger Things for maybe one or two more seasons, S-3 in my personal opinion it was much better than the S-2 and it is because the Duffer Bros. risked a lot with some changes of the plot (although not very radical) which managed to awaken the interest of the public, but as good magicians knew how to use some nostalgic element in a very clever way which helped to drive this new season, recreate how was to be in a Mall in the 80’s with all those memorable brands to brings many childhood memories and mixed with many but many cameos was something evil and well planned, there were so many cameos that really are lost in each chapter, the most notable would be The Terminator, The Thing, Rambo II, The Blob, Back To The Future, The Fly, Magnum PI, Miami Vice, The Neverending Story and of course the Cold War.

But there are some fails, notable consistency problems, I found the first episode very boring then improved in the following chapters just to have some ups and downs in other episodes, there are also details that lower the quality, for example the Eleven’s Shopping , How did she pay for those clothes? She steal it? Did she use her powers? The scene when Dustin and Suzie sings “Neverending Story”, yeah it is cute, tender, loving but very out of place, it is understood that the intention was to cause discomfort and they succeeded, but could manage better, the “death” of Hopper , I think that this has been handled in the worst way since David Harbor himself has given clues that Hopper could still live in addition to the post-credit scene, let’s say it is very obvious and they only managed to deviate the doubts about whether Hopper is still alive to How did Hopper survive? How did Hopper get to be a prisoner of the Soviets?, and I have to say: The Demogorgons again? Really? You can feel how was some rush in the development of the chapters, I think if they want to continue with the success of Stranger Things they will have to go back to the basic and simple of Season 1, but I think this is something impossible given the course of the series and the characters, the best thing would be perhaps to finish the series in Season 4 and give a great end, extend it could be damage something that was close to perfection, I think the only thing that remains of this season is to know if Eleven really lost her powers.

Antes de empezar no se si valga la pena ya dar SPOILER ALERT sobre este review ya que el Internet mismo se ha encargado bien de revelar escenas claves, quizás el hecho de ser una serie de Netflix ya hace asumir a muchos que las personas deben ver una temporada entera en una noche, en fin, SPOILER ALERT…

Hay que reconocer que Stranger Things es el fenómeno mediático de los últimos años, quizás solo superado por Game of Thrones, con la marcada diferencia que el impacto de Stranger Things ha sido quizás más dramático siendo Netflix claro está un servicio de streaming con la posibilidad de abarcar una buena cantidad espectadores gracias al Internet.

Tambien la serie tiene un inicio digno de cualquier historia de superación personal, ya que los Hermanos Duffer y su proyecto fueron rechazados muchas veces hasta que Netflix les dió la entera confianza y el resto es historia, la primera temporada creo que será insuperable ya que fue una fórmula quizas empleada ya en películas como The Goonies y series como Eerie Indiana, en los años 80 un grupo de niños de un pueblo tienen que resolver misteriosos incidentes que ocurren sin explicación alguna lo cual fue algo refrescante para un público digamos cansados de series pretenciosas y sin sentido, pero siendo sinceros esa magia no duraría mucho, la temporada 2 dejó la introducción de personajes memorables como Bob y nuevos personajes de los cuales veríamos a algunos nuevamente en la Season 3 y otros que quizás vuelvan a aparecer para la eventual Season 4 pero que poco aportó a la continuidad de la serie.

La temporada 3 fue esperada por muchos e incluso batió algunos records de Netflix pero la magia se sigue perdiendo y es algo que es inevitable, los hermanos Duffer lo saben y creo que podríamos tener Stranger Things por quizás una o dos temporadas más, la temporada 3 en mi opinión personal fue mucho mejor que la 2 y es porque los Duffer arriesgaron mucho con algunos cambios de la trama (aunque no muy radicales) lo cual logró despertar el interés del publico, pero como buenos magos supieron usar el elemento de nostalgia de forma muy inteligente lo cual ayudó a impulsar esta nueva temporada, el recurso del Mall en la época de los 80’s con aquellas marcas memorables para la infancia de muchos y mezclada con muchos pero muchos cameos fue algo malvado y bien pensado, fueron tantos los cameos que realmente se pierden en cada capítulo, los más notables serían Terminator, The Thing, Rambo II, The Blob, Back To The Future, The Fly, Magnum P.I., Miami Vice, The Neverending Story y por supuesto la Guerra Fría.

Pero hay fallas, problemas de consistencia notables, el primer episodio personalmente me pareció pésimo y aburrido luego mejoró en los capítulos siguientes solo para tener algunas bajas y altas en otros episodios, tambien hay detalles que bajan la calidad por ejemplo cuando Eleven fue de Shopping ¿Con qué dinero pagó lo que compró? ¿Lo robó? ¿Usó sus poderes? La escena cuando Dustin y Suzie cantan la canción “Neverending Story”, si es linda, tierna, amorosa pero muy fuera de lugar, se entiende que la intención era causar incomodidad y lo lograron, pero pudo manejarse mejor, la “muerte” de Hopper, creo que esto ha sido manejado de la peor manera ya que el mismo David Harbour ha dado pistas que Hopper pudiera seguir vivo además que la escena post-créditos digamos que es muy obvia y solo lograron desviar las dudas sobre si Hopper sigue vivo a ¿cómo sobrevivió Hopper? ¿Cómo llego Hopper a ser prisionero de los Soviéticos?, y tengo que decirlo: ¿Otra vez los Demogorgones? ¿En serio?, se sintió que hubo apuro en el desarrollo de los capítulos, creo que si desean continuar con el éxito de Stranger Things van a tener que volver a lo básico y simple de la Season 1, pero creo que esto es algo imposible dado el curso de la serie y los personajes, lo mejor quizás sería terminar la serie en la Season 4 y dar un final digno, extenderla sería ya arruinar algo que estuvo cerca de la perfección, creo que realmente lo único que resta de esta temporada es saber si realmente Eleven perdió sus poderes.
