Super Sons Issue 14 - Cover

REVIEW: Super Sons #14

A hit has been placed on Lois Lane’s life. Talia Al Ghul and the League of Assassins have taken the job and it’s up to the boys to protect Lois while she is in Gotham City working on a story.

What I love most about this title is the individual personalities of both Damien and Jonathan. As expected, Jon is good-natured and personable while Damien is more aloof. The issue does a good job of telling almost two separate stories with a loose connection and making it work through wonderfully quick pacing. This is a brisk, enjoyable read.

As a Superman fan, Jonathan is a star here. He has this undercurrent of responsibility for making good of the Superman name, while still having the good-natured ignorance of being a child. Damien is a great character and this issue highlights his complicated relationship with his mother through a massive battle scene. Damien also has a wonderful moment where he opens up to Jonathan about his past. It shows how much their relationship has grown and is a good summary of where they are at in that relationship. The final few pages are very charming. It makes me sad that this title has been recently canceled. Super Sons will end at issue 16. This is unfortunate as this has been a strong title with a fresh perspective and seems to be hitting its stride.

With regards to the art, I love throwback style covers with dialogue and this is a good one. Carlo Barberi and Art Thibert’s styles compliment each other well and the final product is beautiful. The finished art reminds me of great J. Scott Campbell. Of course, Tomasi nails these characters.

Overall, this is a fun issue with well-executed action, excellent pacing, and great characters. Peter Tomasi really understands the Super Sons and this a joy to read. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
