Superman Rebirth #2: Son of Superman: Part Two

Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason pen the recent Superman Rebirth #2 with art by Mick Gray, colors by John Kalisz and lettering by Rob Leigh.  This second issue takes Superman and his son Jon on their first mission together.  Jon is reluctant to use his burgeoning super powers, especially after the mishap with Goldie the cat in issue one.  The pair is successful although, interestingly, Jon doesn“t yet share his father“s invulnerability nor his aim.

I am a big fan of Superman but rarely find a myself engrossed in the stories.  Superman“s enormous power set make the books seldom seem relatable or the weight of failure large enough.  This is not the case since Rebirth, at least for this fan and father.  I can“t get enough of the family “trilogy”“ of Clark, Lois and Jon.  The story although super powered feels so much like my own struggles as a young man trying to be as great as my father appeared to me.  I could pick numerous panels where I got the family feels over this book.  Particularly when we see the typically reserved Clark snap at their all too neighborly neighbor, Cobb.  I don“t trust this guy!  The script and the art mesh perfectly here.  This is a father who appreciates another looking out for his son but emphatically wants Mr. Branden to know where he stands.

Mick Gray and John Kalisz bring all the SUPERMAN glory to life vividly.  I have no problem reading the emotion of each character based on the art alone.  I can“t continue without including the Rob Leigh lettering which is consistently good.  This issue just worked for me across the board, as a great comic should.

My only lingering concern is although I can find great differences in the beginnings of this new run, the ending coupled with Action Comics Rebirth feel so very much like “Reign of the Supermen!”“  First Doomsday and now the Eradicator?  I am still hooked on this opening arc and I will set back and enjoy the differences before passing judgement.
