REVIEW: TANK GIRL GOLD #2

Sometimes I think reviewing comics that I“m a huge fan of is harder than reviewing comics that I utterly despise more than Neapolitan ice cream. Seriously, just get all three flavors separately, having them together is absolute madness! To just make things sparkly clear: I fucking love Tank Girl, and I adore the fact that she can be widely interpreted to fit many different artists“ styles, just as long as she“s portrayed as the raunchy bad ass she is.

To be honest, I never imagined Tank Girl in a sports-themed issue, but she is a very moldable character, so why not? The first story in the series focuses on a sport that she herself made up called “Crennis”“, and it is ridiculous, but in a good way. There are a few pages that serve as an old school style sports rule book, and I would very much like to see a game in which players go after something called a Gonad, which serves as a ball in this game.

The second story is about Tank Girl taking Hollywood and making a sci-fi movie, which is equally entertaining. I love the little aged details and extra nicks and bits added to the book, and Brett Parson leaves no stone unturned. His style of art is mimicked but nobody can touch his seamless lines and the extra love and care that is apparent in his absurdly entertaining work. The colors take on the same aging that the pages get in some spots, which only goes further to show the themes of the stories, and it“s grand, dahling!

Alan Martin really hits the nail on the butt cheek with getting Tank Girl and her friends“ personalities correct, and I really hate when Tank Girl is represented wrongly. She“s quirky and loveable but so ridiculous, and this is a book that new readers could pick up and instantly know what all the fuss is about.

She is not for everybody, and Tank Girl has been around for a long time. But the fact that her loveable honey Booga and her other friends are in this book is pretty fantastic. The covers are also pretty rad, though I supremely dislike that one variant makes her look like a tired meth addict. Tank Girl is always getting into trouble and constantly has dirt and bruises but damn, that does NOT look like her. Major fail, but only on one variant cover which we can all pretend is of Wendy from Breaking Bad.
