REVIEW: Teen Titans #34, Year Of The Villain Evil Unleashed Tie-In
In the previous issue of Teen Titans #33, Apex Lex Luthor meets up with a trapped Lobo and makes him an offer to hep him get revenge on the Teen Titans. The inner workings of Robin’s prison system is put on display. A trap is set for Mammoth and Shimmer. A screen shows the other inhabitants of the Robin Prison system, Brother Blood / Sebastian Brown,Gizmo / Michael O’Neil , Atomic Skull / Joey Marino, Onomatopoeia / John Thudd, Swerve / Yasmin Edwards.
In the current issue of Teen Titans #34, Mammoth, Shimmer and Atomic Skull / Joey Marino, Onomatopoeia / John Thudd, Swerve / Yasmin Edwards are settling in to their assigned lives in prison. A valuable object is stolen from Teen Titans HQ . Robin heads the investigation and suspects that someone on the inside may be sabotaging the Titans. Stuff gets real in between Crush and Djinn.
Teen Titans #34 is definitely a nice break from the story-line about the “Other”, a narrative that I just don’t here anyone caring about. I feel like have been waiting too long for this to be a storyline, Djinn is bound to her magic ring. If her ring is worn by someone other than her, that individual becomes her master, and she must obey their every command, losing all free will until the ring is taken off. When being commanded, Djinn has limitless magic capabilities. However, without a “master” to command her, she is limited to Flight, Mind Reading, and Illusion Casting.
The art by Bernard Chang was outstanding, I actually counted 13 really nice panels that could have passed for incentive covers. I have to give a special shout out to Marcelo Maiolo as the colorist. The color schemes that differed from character to character, and the darker tones that he used to show the mood in the room as Robin conducted the investigation was great. Also I may be imagining things, but I feel its kinds of funny how similar in appearance some of the villains are to certain hot characters from another competitor.
At the end of the day, its a pretty good issue, and great start to a new story line. I had no problems picking up what was happening, and it left me guessing what’s going to happen next. What I do find interesting is that if you look back at issue #27, it really does foreshadow some of the things that are happening here.
Teen Titans Vol 6 #34 has two covers; Cover A Regular Francis Manapul ; Cover B Variant Alex Garner Cover (Year Of The Villain Evil Unleashed Tie-In).
