Review: Thanos #14

Synopsis:

This issue opens with a bit of philosophy on the Universe and its ultimate destruction at the hands of Thanos. Then we go into Thanos personal background about his life, how it began and why he’s different from his fellow Eternals. His evil was manifest from the day he was born. He already knew his destiny and his fate. It seemed that it had been embedded in his brain. Knowledge of ones own future creates a feeling of indestructible glory and ultimate confidence in ones actions. It’s scary, but great, stuff.

The Creative Team:

Donny Cates brings the reader into the mind of Thanos. We’re given a review of Thanos past attempts at conquering the universe and look at his destructive and careless ways. Nothing matters to him but power! Most of this issue is exposition, but good exposition. The aged Thanos has to look, literally, into his past to see what he has done. How his quest for power drove him to the ultimate loneliness, Cates brings us directly into Thanos despair and shows us the results of his contempt for anyone that isn’t him. A great look into the mind of one of Marvel’s most powerful beings.

Geoff Shaw helps bring Cates words to vivid life with his illustrations of the mad Titan. The battle scene where Thanos is fighting his most unexpected opponent ever are handled extremely well and Shaw helps to give us the feeling of loneliness that this issue is trying to convey. The final splash and wide shot of Thanos world cements that feeling of isolation in a strong way, great work from a great team.

In Conclusion:

You know the old saying Power Corrupts and absolute power… I don’t need to finish that statement but Thanos thirst for said power has brought him to the brink of despair. To the point where he seeks the help of the only person he can find it from. A person that is all to familiar to himself and yet more different than he remembers that person to be. It’s a clever twist that needed to be explored. **** (9.2 rating)
