Thanos finds himself at a cross roads and can’t figure it all out. He takes a gamble that his younger self-will reveal something that he forgot, so he calls upon younger Thanos for aid and support. This issue opens with the almighty one retelling the story of Norrin Radd as he himself is about to face the one called Silver Surfer. The Surfer himself has a surprise in that he is wielding Thor’s hammer, the mighty Mjolnir. Thanos promises to kill the Surfer with that very hammer!
The Creative Team:
Donny Cates wastes no time bringing us into the thick of the battle. Thanos V Silver Surfer. It’s a knock down drag out worthy of the Thrilla in Manilla, The Rumble in the Jungle, and the Thunder in the Hills. Cates throws in a lot of guest star hero and villains, no spoilers here, and it’s an incredible array of super power beat downs with a couple of unexpected twists that will surely delight long time Marvel fans as well as new comers. Great stuff includes The Surfer facing off with another herald of Galactus and Thanos having a trick up his sleeve that the Surfer wasn’t expecting.
Geoff Shaw brings a certain pathos to these characters which is clearly etched in their faces. He gives us a Thanos that is old and tired and yet still calculating. His Silver Surfer has all the nobility one would expect in our intergalactic hero. The young Thanos has all the drive and ambition that he should possess. Highlights include The Silver Surfer splash where one of his former team mates leaps into action, is he friend or foe? Also the splash where he faces off against another former herald of Galactus.
In Conclusion:
This one has ten times the action and goes all out in a Thanos Berserker! Is the Silver Surfer overconfident as he wields mighty Mjolnir? Can Thanos conquer his foes or has he bitten off more than he can chew this time? It’s the Thanos story you’ve been waiting for as Marvel’s over the top intergalactic bad guy goes for the gusto. No one will be disappointed with this issue! **** (9.4 rating)
