Review: The Immortal Hulk #24

Synopsis:

This title boasts an incredible opening, showing the ending of all things through the eyes of Sentience of the Cosmos then reliving the origins of the Fantastic 4 and the Hulk. Then it segues into the current fight between the Hulk and some low lifes. It’s a fight that’s so brutal that the Hulk’s face gets torn off. Of course, this does little to slow the beast down!

The Creative Team:

Al Ewing seems to be trying to outdo his own savagery with each issue that goes by. The creature that General Fortean has become is now in an all-out battle royale with everyone’s favorite Jolly Green Giant. Even as he fights the Hulk to a standstill, his co-workers are questioning his sanity. Has he retained his faculties or has the transformation affected his mind like it’s done with Bruce Banner? To what lengths will those under his command go to upend him? It’s an entertaining read as we question the decisions made by several characters in this title. I can truly say that this title gets better with every new book. Great stuff includes the fate of Euler and Cortez and the Return of a much-beloved character.

Bennet,Jose, Deering, and Poggi do their usual excellent job at making the Hulk the scariest he’s ever been. I especially love it when they bring us into the bowels of hell! Their panels are always over the top horrific and during Halloween month, that’s especially exciting. Highlights include the Hulk with half his skin tore off and the flashback splash where we relive the accident that created the Hulk in the first place.

In Conclusion:

This title improves with every issue. I am so glad that there are still some Marvel titles that aren’t afraid to be brutal. I love a good fight issue between two adversaries of equal strength and the good General seems to be another excellent antagonist for the Jade Giant. It’s a refreshingly violent tale that brings us into the soul of this rampaging beast. ****1/2 (8.8 rating)
