This issue begins with a flashback and Carol Danvers is performing a crazy stunt with a billion dollar airplane, trying to go above the atmosphere, space seems to be calling to her. Then we cut, once again, to my home state of Maine. We seem to be going to Maine a lot in comics and movies and I’m loving every minute of it. While in Maine, Carol is visited by an emissary of the Kree, seems she’s been found guilty of high treason and her sentence is a strong one.
The Creative Team:
Margaret Stohl gives our heroine no time to rest. She pumps up the action from the get go as we are drawn into some spectacular battle scenes between the good Captain, her mother and the Kree warriors. I love a good escapist action comic and this one delivers the goods. Stohl breaks the pace to take us back in time once again and Carol Danvers is an astronaut on board a space station. She discovers some shocking truths about her past and her destiny I love how this is revealed amidst the action and how Danvers was thrust into the adventure of a life time. A lot like Sarah Conner in the Terminator series. Great stuff includes the fate of Ma, which creates a poignant moment for Carol and she discovers the truth about her mother’s mission. Also the appearance of a special guest hero which I wasn’t expecting.
Carlos Pacheco, Rafael Fonteriz and Marguerite Sauvage bring their proficient talent to these pages as the reader is taken on an immense journey into the heart of Carol Danvers as she discovers more new information about herself and her people. The characters jump out at you and seem real from the printed page in the past then into the modern world. Highlights include the opening battle with mother and daughter against the Kree and the final splash page.
In Conclusion:
Carol Danvers fans should be pleased with how the tale ends. It’s a satisfactory conclusion and a touching final scene which sets up future issues and also brings Captain Marvel full circle as she discovers who she is and her purpose in life. A new beginning is on the horizon and these past five issues make us hungry for more of what Mighty Marvel can bring their Kree warrior. And, of course, we are all in anticipation for what the first Captain Marvel movie will bring us in just a few months. ***1/2 (8.7 rating)
