REVIEW: The Tomorrows #3

Written by Curt Pires, art by Ian MacEwan, published by Dark Horse

I always look at sci-fi and wonder if it will be wanky. This is dedicated to Hideo Kajima. I’ll get the tissues.

If you’ve read Akira, The Invisibles, seen Blade Runner and know of the Samurai Pizza Cats then you don’t need to bother with this. If you’ve never heard of any of the above you might be fooled into thinking this is a highly original story.

The writing is trying to be the Fonz but feels more like Ralph. None of the characters stand out because they’re all written as posers, the bad guy is just cliché number three ‘philosophy loon’.

The art, despite feeling hampered by the story is rather good. Clearly inspired by Katsuhiro Otomo, it never the less stands out against crowd. Character design and expressions are a highlight, you really do feel that protagonists a, b and c are as wanky as they’re written.

It’s a huge shame though because the basic premise, mobile phone game ‘Angry Gulls’…yeah…turns children homicidal had legs, it’s just a shame they were wearing corduroy pretending they were Levi’s.
