Review: The Umbrella Academy (Netflix Series)

I wanted to write a review of The Umbrella Academy Netflix’s series since a time before, but I had the mission to read its comic version, specifically the Apocalypse Suite saga on which it is based, and once finished reading the comic it’s time to do the review from the TV series Vs. comic.

The Umbrella Academy is a creation of the famous musician Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and the very talented artist Gabriel Bá, although it could be believed that it’s influenced by X-Men, the influence of Doom Patrol is more noticeable. Although X-Men and D.P. May be similar, they have many differences, in fact the influence of D.P. are the Fantastic Four far from what is thought, but that is another story. So Umbrella Academy is a group of humans with super powers who have the strange characteristic of being born in an apparently spontaneous way (Abducted?) for a total of 43 births of which 7 were “adopted” by The Monocle A.K.A. Sir Reginald Hargreeves.

The Monocle showed little or no affection for children, so they were called by numbers from 1 to 7, however they adapted their own names: Luther (the leader), Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five, Ben and Vanya, accompanied of course by Dr. Pogo a very clever and intelligent chimpanzee, during their childhood the group of young heroes gained great notoriety and fame except Vanya who apparently had no powers and was always excluded, in the future the group would suffer the loss of two of its members: Number Five and Ben, Number Five who has the power to move through time/space accidentally travel to a apocalyptic future from where he couldn’t return after a few years, The Monocle would take this accident as an act of rebellion therefore showed no major concern in Number Five’s whereabouts and Ben eventually will die, according to the series during a mission however in the comic is not given more detail, facts that would mark the future of the group of heroes.

As adults, each member took a different path, Luther who during a mission that was terribly wrong suffered serious damage to his body being his only salvation transplanting his head to the body of a Martian Gorilla to become Space Boy, Diego always rebellious and insolent would assume The identity of The Kraken a kind of night watchman with great acrobatic skills and also can throw sharp objects like knives with great precision, Allison got married and have a daughter, however her marriage would be a failure, is not given more detail about Klaus and finally Vanya who would win the fame that was denied for years publishing a book where she narrates how was the life with The Monocle and her brothers which would cost the confidence of several members of the dysfunctional family, later, the fate will bring them all together (or almost) in a dramatic way.

Basically the series and the comic have the same plot, however there are notable differences, as I mentioned the comic has influence of Doom Patrol and the series is influenced by the movie version of Watchmen directed by Zack Snyder, perhaps as a way to get the attention from the audience and it must be said that it worked, however I was not very pleased that the adaptation of T.V. of Umbrella Academy take that dark and sad tone used by Snyder in Watchmen, of course it is understood that the end of humanity is not something to take with humor, but the sarcasm used in the comic book version is missed.

The facts that led Vanya to be the instrument of destruction of the world in the best way of the Trumpets of Jericho are very different, in the comic we have a more complex scenario since Vanya is used as part of a plan of destruction of the world, passing Vanya previously by a terrible experiment by the villain “The Conductor of the Orchestra”, this experiment would lead Vanya to become The White Violin, while in the series the trigger would be a personal revenge by Harold Jenkins who in the past was rejected by Hargreeves to live the rest of his life cultivating a bitter hatred towards the Academy.

The inclusion of characters like Ben, Hazel and Cha-Cha was very interesting and successful, Ben thanks to the powers of Klaus would be a fundamental piece in stopping Vanya unlike the comics since Ben would remain just as a recall, while Hazel and Cha-Cha will have the mission to neutralize (kill, kaput, pulverize) Number Five at any cost for his betrayal to the Agency for which he worked, in the comic these characters would not appear but until the sequel to Apocalypse Suite, The Umbrella Academy: Dallas.

In conclusion on the Chino scale from 1 to 10 where 1 is the lowest score and 10 the highest this series takes a deserved 7, I think perhaps a better development of the motivations or actions that led Vanya to become The White Violin would have given one more emotion to the series, I really feel that the series failed a bit here, having Ellen Page as Vanya was a safe bet considering that she is an actress with a lot of character and charisma, however this made her character predictable, meanwhile Robert Sheehan in the role of Klaus was who stole the show, is a character with a lot of power and charisma and I would dare to say that it outperforms its counterpart in the comics, in short, a decent adaptation of one of the greatest events of recent years in the never boring world of the 9th. Quería hacer un review de la serie The Umbrella Academy de Netflix, pero antes tenía la misión de leer su versión en cómic, específicamente la saga Apocalypse Suite en la cual se basa, ya una vez terminado de leer el comic pues es justo hacer el review de la serie Vs. cómic.

The Umbrella Academy es una creación del famoso músico Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) y el muy talentoso artista Gabriel Bá, pese a que pudiera creerse que se influencia por X-Men es más notoria la influencia de Doom Patrol. Créanme pueden ser parecidos pero D.P. Y X-Men tienen muchas diferencias, de hecho la influencia de D.P. son los Fantastic Four lejos de lo que se piensa, pero esa es otra historia. Así que Umbrella Academy es un grupo de humanos con superpoderes quienes tienen la extraña característica de haber nacido de forma aparentemente espontánea (¿Abducidos?) y nacieron 43 de los cuales 7 fueron “adoptados” por The Monocle A.K.A. Sir Reginald Hargreeves.

The Monocle mostraba poco o nada de afecto hacia los niños, tanto así que fueron llamados por números del 1 al 7, sin embargo ellos adptaron sus propios nombres: Luther (el lider), Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five, Ben y Vanya, acompañados por supuesto por el Dr. Pogo un chimpancé con algo grado de inteligencia, durante su niñez el grupo de jóvenes héroes cobró gran notoriedad y fama excepto Vanya quién en apariencia no tenía poderes y era siempre excluída, en el futuro el grupo sufriría un duro golpe con la pérdida de dos de sus miembros: Number Five y Ben, Number Five tiene el poder de desplazarse por el tiempo/espacio cosa que lo llevo de forma accidental al futuro de donde no podría regresar pasados unos años, The Monocle tomaría este accidente como un acto de rebeldía por tanto no mostró mayor preocupación al respecto, en tanto Ben moriría (según la serie durante una misión sin embargo en el cómic no se da más detalle) hechos que marcarían el futuro del grupo de héroes.

Ya siendo adultos cada uno tomó un camino diferente, Luther quién en una misión que resultó terriblemente mal sufrió graves daños en su cuerpo siendo su única salvación transplantar su cabeza al cuerpo de un Gorila Marciano se convertiría en Space Boy, Diego siempre rebelde e insolente asumiría la identidad de The Kraken una especie de vigilante nocturno con gran habilidad acrobática y arrojar objetos filosos como cuchillos, Allison formaría un hogar teniendo una hija, sin embargo su matrimonio sería un fracaso, de Kláus no se da mayor detalle y finalmente Vanya quién ganaría la fama que le fue negada durante años publicando un libro donde narra la vida junto a The Monocle y sus hermanos cosa que le costaría la confianza de varios miembros de la disfuncional familia, luego el destino los reuniría a todos (o casi) de una forma dramática.

Básicamente la serie y el cómic tienen la misma trama base, sin embargo hay notorias diferencias, como mencioné el comic tiene influencia de Doom Patrol y la serie está influenciada por la versión cinematográfica de Watchmen dirigida por Zack Snyder, quizás como una manera de enganchar al público y hay que decir que funcionó.

Sin embargo en lo personal no me agradó mucho que la adaptación de T.V. de Umbrella Academy tomara ese tono oscuro y triste a lo Zack Snyder que precísamente usa en Watchmen, por supuesto se entiende que el fin de la humanidad no sea algo para tomar con humor, pero se extraña el sarcasmo con el que la versión del cómic se narran los hechos.

Los hechos que llevaron a Vanya a ser el instrumento de destrucción del mundo al mejor estilo de las Trompetas de Jericó son muy diferentes teniendo la del cómic un sentido más complejo ya que Vanya es utilizada como parte de un plan de destrucción del mundo, pasando Vanya previamente por un terrible experimento por parte del villano “The Conductor of the Orchestra”, este experimento llevaría a Vanya a convertirse en The White Violin, mientras que en la serie el detonante sería una confusa venganza personal por parte de Harold Jenkins quien en el pasado fuera rechazado por Hargreeves para su ingreso a la Academia para así vivir el resto de su vida cultivando un amargo odio hacia la Academia.

La inclusión de personajes como Ben, Hazel y Cha-Cha fue muy interesante y acertada lo cual dió un buen peso a la serie, Ben gracias a los poderes de Kláus sería pieza fundamental en detener a Vanya a diferencia de los cómics ya que Ben permanecería solo como un recuerdo, mientras que Hazel y Cha-Cha tendrían la misión de neutralizar (matar, hacer kaput, pulverizar) a Number Five a cualquier costo por su traición a la Agencia para la cual trabajaba, en el comic estos personajes no aparecerían sino hasta la secuela de Apocalypse Suite, The Umbrella Academy: Dallas.

En conclusión en la escala Chino del 1 al 10 donde 1 es la puntuación más baja y 10 la más alta esta serie se lleva un merecido 7, creo que quizás un mejor desarrollo de las motivaciones o acciones que llevaron a Vanya a convertirse en The White Violin hubieran dado un ingrediente más de poder a la serie, realmente siento que la serie falló un poco acá, tener a Ellen Page como Vanya fue una apuesta segura considerando que es una actriz de mucho caracter y carisma, sin embargo esto hizo predecibile que su personaje estuviera destinado a cosas mayores en la serie (para quienes no habíamos leído el comic), por su parte Robert Sheehan en el rol de Kláus fue quien se robó el show, es un personaje con mucha potencia y carisma y me atrvería a decir que supera en protagonismo a su contraparte de los comics, en fin, una adaptación decente de uno de los sucesos más grandes de los últimos años en el nunca aburrido mundo del 9no. Arte.
