REVIEW: Thor #12

”¢ Fatherly love is not something with which Loki Laufeyson is terribly familiar. Still, you’d think that with the Frost Giants invading New York in Malekith’s WAR OF THE REALMS, he’d find some quality time to spend with dear old deadly Dad. And he will. But not in the way you’d think.

Thor Vol 5 #12 Cover A Regular Mike Del Mundo Cover (War Of The Realms Tie-In)Hey Marvel !Way to have a week! First Disney drops the news about their premium content streaming service Disney plus with your content being the main attraction. Then you also drop the news bout not only a Loki mini-Series, but a Loki comic book series as well. But is Loki a big enough of a character to carry series on his own? That question gets answered real quick in the first panels of Thor #12, as he muses about his first prank in which he almost got his brother Thor to kiss a Bilgesnipe.
Thor #12 which is a War of the Realms tie in continues after War of the Realms #1 which had claimed three victims right out of the gate. Thor gets trapped on another plane. Odin is assassinated in the early pages of the issue, and the book closes with Loki apparently sacrificing himself and being eaten by his Frost Giant father, Laufey. Apparently any doubts that we had as to whether that Loki’s death was final was well founded.

So stick with me here, in Thor #12 “War of the Lokis” the current version of Loki meets up with the past version of Loki, as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy version (kid Loki). And then he meets up with the future Loki who becomes Loki the Necrogod, the All butcher (First Appearance) with the all-black Necrosword .
Quick fact: The 1st appearance of the Modern Day Loki was in Journey into Mystery #85, but, a version of the character first appeared in Venus #6.

The art by Mike Del Mundo is absolutely captivating, abstractly terrifying and worth the price of admission. I’d like to give props to the letterer Joe Sabino whose placement just flows with the panels.

So, for any one who doubts whether or not a Loki comic book series will work, I give you exhibit A.
