REVIEW: Thor #13

Synopsis:

Thor is back in his rightful place as the God of Thunder however, he is still unworthy of wielding Mjolnir. But a lot has changed since Odin has neglected the other realms. Malekith the accursed has conquered or aligned with nine of the ten realms and now he“s bent on taking Midgard, Earth! Ravaged with guilt feelings about his neglect, Odin sent his brother, Cul, the god of fear on a secret mission to Malekith“s home realm. There he discovered the secret to ordering vast armies across the realms.

The Creative Team:

Jason Aaron opens this issue with Cul describing why none of us have heard of him. He“s describing the conflicted deal he made with Odin. While in the Weapons room of Asgard, he allowed Odin to choose any weapon he would like to strike him with one time, provided he would get the second strike. It was a clever ruse on the part of Cul which showed Culs strength of will. I really enjoyed the origin of Cul in this issue and the confrontation that the Thunder god had with his father. It made for some engaging banter with our heroes. Great stuff includes the weapon that Cul chose to hit Odin with and the Asgardians realization that they didn“t take Malekith“s war seriously enough. Mike Del Mundo brings a gritty realism to his depictions of the Asgardians and their realms. The muted colors are a sharp contrast to the bright world we“ve become accustomed to, but this view of Asgard works within the confines of this tale. The story telling is dark, so the fallen realms must also be dark and gritty highlights include Odin“s attempt to lift the hammer of Ivaldi and the brother on brother clash latter on in this issue.

In Conclusion: We learn a lot of new things about the Asgardian first family in this tragic tale of negligence and overconfidence. Odin“s heretofore unknown brother is a welcome addition to the whole Norse mythological canon, even if he wasn“t mentioned in all the mythological tales. He is to Odin what Loki is to Thor, a pain in his godly side. The reasons why he was never mentioned are intriguing as we dwell upon his own fears and setbacks. This all builds up to an exciting climax as we face”¦to be continued! **** (9.3 rating)
