Review: Turtles of Grayskull #2
Turtles of Grayskull #2 is a much more by the books crossover issue than the creative introduction. Rather than the madness of the Grayskull powered turtles and villains from the outset, this portion of the crossover reverts back to He-Man first meeting the Turtles while battling Dino-warriors in a battle arena.
Freddie Williams III is able to use this crossover to stretch his artistic muscles with dynamic battle sequences alongside perfect depictions of the heroes and villains. But there is not enough to the plot here. The story is driven by the arrival or Timestress Rennet Tilley who is dedicated to preventing the collision of the Turtles and He-Man we saw last issue.
She continues to go back in time Groundhog Day style but ends up in that same crazy amalgam between mutants and Grayskull magic. She begins by requiring they all introduce each other including outing He-Man as a teenage Prince Adam. He is completely embarrassed by this but it allows the Turtles to connect with him as a fellow vulnerable teenager. She then works to separate them but doesn’t get this quite right. She sends He-Man to earth where he runs into Bebop, Rocksteady and eventually Casey Jones. She sends the TMNT to Eternia where Mikey leaves Adam’s family a note so they don’t worry about him. They then meet Teela and Man-at-Arms. Most interestingly she sends herself to ancient Japan and meets up with a rat Splinter before his mutation. The issue takes all the promise of last issue and removes it. But the ending of the issue does leave promise of potential excitement to come.
