I’m going to be honest. I’m not the biggest reader of indie comics. I mean, as an indie creator, I always want to support fellow small-press publishers, but I just find myself month after month preferring to pick up Saga or Sex Criminals over some smaller book.
That being said, every once in a blue moon an indie comic comes my way for a review, and I decide to just dive into it. Such is the case with We Can Never Go Home, a fun 5-issue mini that comes from Matthew Rosenberg, Patrick Kindlon, and Black Mask Studios.
Admittedly, I don’t love stories starring teenagers. I think, often times, adults who write stories starring teenagers miss some key parts of adolescence and try too hard to make their teenage-speak believable. But while some parts of this series do scream that (the dialogue between Duncan, Madison, and the other kids is atrocious at moments), the overall flow and constant perky dialogue makes this series a fun one to read.
This fun writing is aided by Josh Hood’s art, which makes me think of a mix between a less-nuanced Cliff Chiang and David Aja. While admittedly not my favorite style, because it feels plain and not particularly expressive, it helps advance the story and convey emotions, which is all I can ask for in a comic of this sort.
There are flaws, admittedly. The dialogue doesn’t always sound natural, and the art/coloring can feel a bit bland at times. But overall, this issue exemplifies some of the best parts of this mini-series, which will be wrapping up next issue. It’s fun, exciting, and ends on a cliff-hanger that has me excited for the conclusion. Check it out!
