Review: WOLVERINE #22
The line between absurd and idiotic is a thin one and unfortunately Wolverine 22 crosses that line. What started out as an insane and fun crossover with Deadpool breaking the fourth wall and bringing in government engineered mutant doppelgängers has deteriorated into an odd iconic where Wolverine keeps cutting Deadpool up into pieces. The issue has exciting art by Adam Kubert but it feels wasted on a comic which stretches our understanding of just how much needless torture Logan is willing to put Wade through.
The issue begins with Wolverine and Deadpool in prison where Logan promptly stabs Wade through the head just for talking too much. A Danger unit faces off against Maverick and Weasel as Wolverine cuts Deadpool in half to aid their escape. Hijinks and a chase ensue but none of it feels like a Wolverine comic. Wolverine uses Deadpool as dead weight to push a car pedal.
They escape with a briefcase as we get exposition on a larger impending threat. Blind Al helps the team and deciphers the link between the Danger unit and the abandoned Xavier school. This issue has energy and some solid action but the tone is so bogged down in the absurd and repeated torture of Deadpool that it distracts from the entire story.
This feels like a Deadpool comic but since we don’t really get his perspective here it makes the entire book feel disjointed and silly. This crossover started out with so much promise and daring but persisted too long and dragged Logan’s character into the mindset of Deadpool. Hopefully the book is designed to realize this and perhaps bridge things over to Wade ending up calling him on it or perhaps taking on the mindset of Logan as the story progresses.
