Review: Wolverine the Long Night #4

Synopsis:

Burns, Alaska is in a state of chaos after a series of mysterious deaths has panicked the town. Agents Pierce and Marshall are convinced that Wolverine is somehow involved. These agents along with deputy Bobby, are investigating the damage that Logan has left in his wake. His connection to the wealthy Langrock family is suspicious and more bodies are discovered, but this time, one of the victims is alive!

The Creative Team:

Benjamin Percy is creating that noir style mystery that I love to read. Apparently, thieves are breaking into peoples homes and stealing…lightbulbs. The culprits are a cult called the Aurora cult. Fatalism and nihilism are two of the traits for a good noir story. The American dream went wrong. The illusion of a hero that’s willing to fight the bad guy. It seems that the Langrocks are under fire and the protestors are starting to get violent. Logan does his best to right a wrong, knowing he can’t change the past, but, even though his effort is a drop in the bucket, it’s still something. I love a good mystery and the clues keep getting us closer to the solution, but, in true noir fashion, they also create more questions than they answer. Wolverine is on another one of his guilt trips and things are getting gritty for our anti-hero. Great stuff includes the chemistry between Logan and Sherman, also, the curse on the Langrocks Tarrack.

Marcio Takara has a laid back style in his illustrations which fits the noir narrative quite well. He keeps the proceedings dark and brooding along with Matt Milla the panels are somewhat muddied. This brings about a feeling of foreboding which keeps the suspense boiling under. Highlights include the splash with the animal remains and the flashback into Wolverine’s past, namely in Afghanistan.

In Conclusion:

The detectives are suspecting the Langrocks of some shady business. But is Logan involved in the scheme, or is he trying to expose it? the answer to that question keeps us on our toes for the entire issue as we observe the detectives getting closer to the truth and Logan finding his own way in the process. The set up for the next issue promises some intense moments as we get closer to the fact of the matter. **** (8.8 rating)
