REVIEW: WYRD #1
- An unaging, invincible detective with a penchant for the strange, Wyrd is the one the government calls when things go very badly and very strange.
- Written by Curt Pires; Art by Antonio Fuso; Colors by Stefan Simeone; Lettering by Micah Myers.Â
If you are disgusted by the way characters are constantly getting killed off and coming back, maybe you should stick to immortal characters who can“t even die in the first place. That way readers don“t have to worry about them dying on us only to come back a while later. Enter Pitor Wyrd and Pete Wisdom with a John Constantine swagger who is a presumably immortal alcoholic, contracted by the Department of Defense to investigate weird stuff; who spends his off-time testing the limits of his immortality by getting even more drunk and throwing himself in front of cars.
In Wyrd #1, We meet Pitor as he“s literally jumping into Los Angeles traffic below, right before he gets contracted to travel to Crimea (a current European hotspot) to deal with a Cold-War Era Bio Weapon super soldier, causing havoc on a small town.
The choice to integrate a little girl to the story is a stroke of genius because if you really want to know about back story or wondered whether he is a complete asshole of good forces or evil all you have to do is read into how he treats the little girl. Talia“s past. It was also sort of interesting to see that for all the trouble she has caused other people, she’s trying to make things right.
Antonio Fuso“s penciling has created a realistic landscape for Pitor Wyrd to operate in and nails the look of his surroundings. Sometime it“s just better to show rather than tell and this issue nails it on the head. He also really has a talent for closing up action scenes. Colorist Stefan Simeone masterfully t does an outstanding job in capturing the feel and moments of the panels. My one complaint is that several of the panels feel out-of-place.
Out of 5 stars I give it a 4. This in that it was good, and has peaked my interest enough that I want to pick-up the 2st issue of Wyrd #1. I would recommend picking up a copy of this issue. This being a first appearance of Wyrd #1, It does have legs and I can envision the character having a pretty good run but I would wait a little bit before speculating on this book, either way it is a good read!
