Maybe it“s a sign of my changing tastes, but it seems that there has been a resurgence of very dark and creepy storytelling in comics. From Outcast to The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage, I have embraced the return of tasteful horror with arms wide open, and among the best in the genre is Scott Snyder and Jock“s Wytches from Image Comics.
The first issue of the series provided readers with a solid base, introducing us to the Rooks, a family worn down by tragedy and looking for a fresh start. Each character is unique and interesting and even from the first issue showed a great deal of depth.
The mysterious accident which left Lucy, Sailor“s mother, wheelchair bound is further fleshed out throughout this issue as well. Even though she claims to have been hurt after hitting a deer, the truth may be far more sinister, and I look forward to seeing what kind of consequences the event will have with the overall plot of the book.
Jock“s art is spot on in this issue. The panels are well arranged and work well with the pacing of the story, often leading up to larger panels and full page reveals that are simply stunning. A great deal of credit goes to Matt Hollingworth“s incredible color work for creating an atmosphere fitting of the mood of the book.
If you enjoyed the first issue, there“s no reason not to pick up Wytches #2. Snyder is a strong writer, but always seems to be at his best when working on his own projects, and Wytches is shaping up to be a masterful story.
