Review: X-Men Blue Annual #1
It’s a time travel tale as the original X-Men are transported to the present time. This issue opens on the planet Klyntar, home world of the symbiotes. An alien is hunting these creatures claiming he needs to capture five of them. Then we cut to Madripoor, Earth. Scott Summers, A.K.A. Cyclops is talking to his dad on a cell phone. The conversation is interrupted as Mr. Summers has to go into battle with the Starjammers.
The Creative Team:
Cullen Bunn is one of my favorite writers in the medium of comic books. He has a way of leading you to think one thing is going to happen when just the opposite goes down. Bunn is in top form here as he brings the Starjammers to a precarious predicament and has them at the mercy of the Symbiotes. Scott and the other X-Men want to help, so where does Cullen lead them? to another symbiote of course. He then brings us into the minds of the dual personality that is Venom and shows the anti-heroes conflict as one side doesn’t want anything to do with this mission while the other is trying to convince him to go along! Great stuff!
Edgar Salazar brings a certain nobility to the original teenage mutants. As one of Marvel’s long time original superhero groups they command a degree of respect that this creative team has rightfully imparted to our heroes. They couldn’t be in better hands. Highlights are the introduction of Venom as he takes out a gang of ruffians. The splash of the original X-Men has old-time Marvel fans reminiscing of the good old days and the fight scene between X-Men and Venom is probably the artistic zenith to this inspired issue.
In Conclusion:
Venom expresses his doubts that these kids can succeed in this mission and he suggests that they call on the current X-Men lineup but It’s a race against time as the students of Charles Xavier are attempting to reach the Starjammers before the Symbiotes succeed in their mission to… nah, no spoilers here, we’ll just say they’re up to no good and leave it at that. This issue gives new meaning to the term Bar room brawl! To be continued. *** (8.4 rating)
