During my time with Comic Crusaders, I have had the opportunity to read a lot of different books from various publishers. It amazes me the talent that we have in the comics world, and the stories that we get from all of these creative writers and artists. We truly live in a glorious age where I truly believe that Indie Comics provides some of the absolute best stories and work in the Industry. That statement holds true with Mad Cave Studios series, Knights of The Golden Sun. A seven part series that takes readers back to the days of the Old Testament, and makes it absolutely badass. Writer Mark London and Artist Mauricio Villarreal bring together the perfect combination of writing and art to create something absolutely angelic.
We follow the story of some of the most known characters in from the Bible, Michael, Gabriel, Lucifer, Azreal and more in a story of action, loyalty and betrayal, and battling for all of humanity. The battle between the Archangels and The Fallen is such a fulfilling story that as I read through the series, stopping was not an option. Each book leaves the reader craving for more, so much that it is damn near addictive in nature. In fact, the fluidity of the story was such that I literally could not stop reading it, which is quite a feat in itself as I tend to get bored with books easily. So for me to stay interested in the series and not want to stop, I say Bravo to Mark for a job well done. The character development for was in-depth enough to provide the reader the opportunity to get to know the characters without it feeling like an origin story, even if you’ve read the Old Testament. Even throughout the arc, there’s enough twists and turns that you will not only enjoy the progression of the story, but develop an appreciation for how the story was put together.
The artwork of this series was something else. Truly amazing and Villarreal brings his talent to the table with solid art throughout the book. I feel like in comics now, we often see amazing splash pages but the smaller panels suffer to meet the deadlines. Not with Knights of The Golden Sun. Each page, each panel is carefully crafted to not only bring the story to life, but to enhance the already amazing story to a level that even the Gods would view this and say “It is well”. From character design, the environments, and even the lettering, so much detail was spent on the book that any reader that picks up this series, not just the first book but the full series is truly in for a treat.
Is Knight of The Golden Sun worth picking up? Absolutely! Will you be disappointed? In my opinion, Nope not at all. I hope that the team of London and Villarreal continue with more stories down the road, but for the sake of this series, I am more than happy with how this turned out. Rating: 5/5!
