WEBCOMIC WEDNESDAY REVIEW: VG Cats

Creator: Scott Ramsoomair
Webcomic Link: VG Cats

Summary: VG Cats is a comedy webcomic based primarily in video game related humor (VG=Video Game). It has been around since 2001, and has an impressive archive of strips despite irregular updates from the creator, Scott. The strip typically satirizes current video games or trends in the gaming industry, and despite using a cast of recurring characters, VG Cats does not have an overreaching plot. In addition to the primary series, which focuses on a different gaming topic each update, usually using the primary characters Leo and Aeris, there is a comic called Super-Effective, that follows a play through of the original Pokemon games.

Story: While there isn’t much in the way of story when it comes to VG Cats, the writing is executed nicely. The comedy is witty and in tune with current events when it comes to video games and technology. The jokes range from silly to dark, but for the most part there isn’t anything included (aside from the Fetus 5) that the average reader would find too offensive. The observations included in Super Effective are a blend of nostalgia and reference humor, and should be enjoyable to anyone who is familiar with Red or Blue Version.

Art: VG Cats has seen a drastic improvement in art over the years (and there have been fifteen of them). The characters are bright and eccentric, even when depicting real life individuals. Coloring is especially nice in the comic, helping the exaggerated expressions pop out of the screen. And even though Super Effective is in black and white, it still manages a fun and energetic style, while referencing the classic Gameboy look for its panels and lettering. It’s not breaking down any barriers, or reinventing the wheel, but Scott’s comics are as visually appealing as they are amusing.

Conclusion: VG Cats and Super Effective are fun reads for even casual gamers. They’re definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for some light-hearted comedy, and if you go back through the archives, it can be fairly nostalgic to be reminded of all the old gaming trends and events.
