Shero Comics and “Young Grandmaster Choi” Join 2025 We Are Stronger Than Censorship Cohort

Fighting Book Bans: Young Grandmaster Choi Selected for Prestigious Anti-Censorship Initiative

Shero Comics, an award-winning independent comic book publisher dedicated to amplifying the voices of Black women and girls, is proud to announce that its celebrated manga, Young Grandmaster Choi, has been selected for the “We Are Stronger Than Censorship” program’s 2024-2025 cohort. This impactful initiative, which champions literary freedom and access, has recognized Young Grandmaster Choi as one of twenty outstanding books nationwide chosen to counter the surge in book bans across the United States.

The “We Are Stronger Than Censorship” program, a beacon of support for diverse and inclusive narratives, stands at the forefront of the movement to resist book censorship. Through this initiative, publishers and creators with stories that reflect underrepresented communities and nuanced perspectives receive resources, amplification, and advocacy. This year, Young Grandmaster Choi will join other voices in counteracting restrictive measures that hinder access to literature and diminish representation.

“Young Grandmaster Choi” is more than a story; it’s a rallying cry for the power of perseverance, inclusivity, and strength,” said Shequeta Smith the CEO of Shero Comics. “In a time when access to diverse narratives is under attack, this program not only protects our work but also upholds the fundamental right of readers, especially young readers, to see themselves and their experiences represented in literature.”

The book banning crisis in the United States has escalated, with a significant rise in challenges against books that feature diverse characters and storylines. According to recent reports, thousands of titles, including graphic novels, have been restricted in school and library systems, narrowing the scope of accessible literature for children and young adults. This movement disproportionately affects books that spotlight BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other marginalized voices, depriving readers of stories that foster understanding, empathy, and cultural awareness.

Young Grandmaster Choi centers on Rayven Choi, a young martial arts prodigy overcoming personal and societal obstacles, providing young readers with a safe and inspiring narrative that champions resilience, courage, and positive representation. Recently celebrated in libraries nationwide, Young Grandmaster Choi has received widespread acclaim for offering an alternative to mainstream manga, particularly by presenting a strong, relatable young female protagonist without oversexualized portrayals.

In response to the mounting pressures of censorship, Shero Comics remains steadfast in its mission to provide empowering stories that uplift Black women and girls. Through Young Grandmaster Choi and the “We Are Stronger Than Censorship” program, Shero Comics continues its work to create impactful stories that inspire, educate, and resonate with readers across all backgrounds.
