After nearly two decades of development, Steve Stern and Gary Laib have unveiled their Voidwalker graphic novel on Zoop.
“Zoop only focuses on crowdfunding comics and graphic novels,” said Stern, the co-creator of Zen Intergalactic Ninja, which he first self-published along with artist Dan Cote in 1987.
Laib, an award-winning fantasy artist whose clients include Wizards of the Coast, Ubisoft and Blizzard Entertainment, said, “Steve and I started developing Voidwalker in the early 2000s, and we felt it was time to share it with everyone who loves a great fantasy story.”
Stern’s Beowulf graphic novel, which was published by the UK’s Markosia in 2007, has remained in print ever since. “Beowulf is considered by many to be the foundational text for all fantasy literature, which is as important a genre to me as is sci-fi,” he said.
Voidwalker is a 100-page graphic novel that tells the tale of young Toron, who sets out on a perilous journey across unknown lands to rescue his twin brother from an unspeakable evil. Along the way, he’s aided by Dandrid the Voidsmith, whose soul is encased in a gemstone and who will equip him with newfound powers while teaching him the meaning of heroism against all odds.
Stern said, “In addition to all of the extraordinary characters, thrilling action and otherworldly magic that you’d expect to find within its pages, Voidwalker also deals with such themes as grief, the redemptive power of love, and personal transformation that will resonate with a modern audience.”
“This is my first foray into illustrating a complete graphic novel, and I couldn’t be happier than to be bringing this unique fantasy tale to life,” Laib added.
