Avengers set to Guard the Galaxy in 2018

With Marvel“s comic book superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and Spider-Man having already taken the world by storm both individually and then collectively as the Avengers, along with other superheroes from the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it may be hard to believe that the franchise could get any bigger. Still, in 2018, it promises to do just that with the eagerly awaited Avengers: Infinity War.

Picking up after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War sees the remaining Avengers led by Iron Man team up with The Guardians of the Galaxy to protect Earth from the power-hungry Thanos, who is trying to gather all the Infinity Stones to create a Gauntlet that will allow him to bend reality to his will. Avengers: Infinity War is said to be the culmination of the past 10 years of storytelling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and could quite possibly be the biggest movie ever made.

The current roster of protagonists includes 64 characters according to Marvel; that’s perhaps not surprising considering the Guardians of the Galaxy will be joining the already substantial Avengers lineup of both Tony Stark“s and Steve Rogers“ factions from Captain America: Civil War.

Joining the Avengers ensemble will be Dr Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) after he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016“s Doctor Strange, a film that told the story of how the hero acquired his powers and abilities following a traffic accident. Scott Lang/Ant-Man (played by Paul Rudd) joins the ensemble following 2015’s Ant-Man movie, which shows how a former cat burglar becomes a hero with the aid of a suit that can alter his size.

T’Challa / Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, will also be teaming up with the Avengers in Infinity War. This will not be his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, as there is a Black Panther movie due for release in February 2018, ahead of the Avengers sequel, where his history and personality will be introduced in more detail.

Thanks to Steve Cas, one of the concept artists for the new movie, some of the promo artwork is now available online. He recently took to Instagram to share a photo revealing a glimpse of how the new movie will look and, since then, more artwork and images have become available showing the Avengers and Guardians together.

Captain America“s costume is noticeably worn and distressed with his patriotic symbols missing, possibly torn off by Steve Rogers himself – a development that would indicate that he may be transitioning into Nomad (if he hasn“t already). Tony Stark appears to be wearing a new Iron Man suit that features the bleeding edge technology hinted at in previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, something that Iron Man fans have surely been waiting to see realized on the big screen.

Spiderman also looks to be wearing the Stark designed iron spider suit as seen at the end of Spiderman: Homecoming. Groot also seems to have grown into a teenager holding what appears to be a games console. Avengers action, thanks to the rise of the popularity of the franchise in general, as well as superhero action in general, can be enjoyed in many more places than the cinema nowadays. In addition to official merchandise from the usual (t-shirts and mugs) to the outright unexpected (Groot tiki mugs and Captain America Bath Rugs), superheroes are a trending theme of video games of all sorts in recent years. From 2016’s Lego Marvel’s Avengers to Batman: Arkham Knight, superheroes seem to be everyone’s favourite character to play with. In more niche genres, there are online slots that feature familiar characters, such as Paddy Power’s Iron Man, as well as mobile-only RPG Marvel: Future Fight, developed by Netmarble Games.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently set to be released late April/ Early May 2018 and is quite possible the most eagerly anticipated movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it is not only this movie that has fans on the edge of their seats, an as yet to be titled sequel is said to be filmed back to back with Avengers: Infinity War and is due to be released in May 2019 and we can expect it to be as eagerly awaited as Avengers: Infinity War is shaping up to be. Although there is still much speculation surrounding what else Marvel has in store for the fans, there is no doubt that Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a truly epic movie!
