Incredible Geeky Festivals To Put On Your Bucket List

By Jane Sandwood

We may all be stuck indoors at the moment, but you can bet your bottom dollar that as soon as lockdown is over, the world is going to be celebrating. There will be parties with friends, barbecues and of course, festivals. These social gatherings are part of our culture and our souls ”” they are a vital way of embracing our individuality and shouting it from the rooftops. There are some amazing geeky festivals around the world you can attend where you won’t be judged for your fashion choices (like at Coachella). You can enjoy arts, music and comedy with other like-minded people and take part in an amazing celebration.

Steampunk World“s Fair

Steampunk World“s Fair is an incredible spectacle of spectacles ”” it is the biggest Steampunk gathering in the world. The festival takes place every year in May in Piscataway, New Jersey. The first thing you will notice is of course the clothes. Here, cosplay is taken to a whole new level, so make sure that you dress ready for that trip in your mechanical dirigible. Hats are a must-have item, the bigger the better and a pair of airship goggles – just embrace your inner Victorian. For the occasion, choosing the right festival outfit that celebrates a clash of historical meets modern with a little velvet on the side is key. At the Steampunk there is music, food and a great sense of camaraderie. Don“t forget to bring the absinthe and your pocketwatch.

Endless Night Vampire Ball

Three days, leading up to the festival climax on October 31st in New Orleans. Could there be a more perfect place and time for a celebration of all things vampiric? There is a three tier dress code;

  • Level 1  – Black tie, fangs included

  • Level 2 – Formal vampire – think Edwardian cloaks, top hats and pagans

  • Level 3 – Full on Venetian Carnivale. But for vampires.

At this dark festival, the midnight circus is definitely one to stay up for ”” there is a communal howling with Father Sebastiaan, followed by some incredibly diverse acts. Don“t expect to see any clowns though. This three day event is host to live music, vendors, burlesque performers and “fangsmiths.”“ No werewolves allowed.

Abbey Medieval Festival

Abbey Medieval Festival is held annually in Queensland, Australia ”” it is the biggest Medieval celebration of its kind. If you love history and time travel, then this is the festival for you. Whilst you are there, make sure that you put one of the many banquets on your to-do list and don“t forget to attend one of the knighting ceremonies. There is plenty of family-friendly jousting going on and you can dine with Kings, Queens, Lords and Ladies. If you have a passion for reenactments, then this Medieval festival should definitely be on your annual calendar. Don“t forget to pack your swords and armor.

Once lockdown is over, the festivals will be bigger and better than ever all over the world. Embrace your inner geek and celebrate what makes you unique and individual.
