There“s reason to rejoice, superhero gamers! The dream team trifecta of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac Games, and Marvel have teamed up to create a brand-new Spider-Man adventure for PlayStation 4, aptly titled Spider-Man. Scheduled for worldwide release on September 7th, the title of this Spidey installment may lack frills, but the gameplay is sure to be riveting.
Sequels and franchises are big business in the video game universe, and the new PS4 Spider-Man is set to be a fine continuation for Stan Lee“s web-spinning protagonist. Whether it“s GTA5 so fabulously continuing the Grand Theft Auto franchise, the stunning Breath of the Wild edition of The Legend of Zelda, or Split Hold“Em, a novel twist to the popular classic Texas Hold“Em, we love new inventions of familiar games.
As we patiently wait for the main course, a few delicious morsels about Spider-Man have already leaked out to whet our appetites.
Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, is probably one of the best superheroes to be transposed to the video game world. Spidey has been the subject of a series of games dating back to the Prehistoric Age of 1982, when he first appeared in a self-titled game for the Atari 2600.
But 2018“s Spider-Man isn“t your daddy“s Spidey video game. The latest and greatest release promises a new kind of Peter Parker””older and more experienced than we“ve seen before. The storyline and character depictions aren“t connected to any previous Spider-Man comic book, movie, or video game. We should all approach this fresh release with an open mind and eager thumbs.
At 23, Peter Parker already has eight years of protecting New York City as Spider-Man under his belt. Parker is portrayed as being at a crossroads, as he struggles by day to find a balance between his personal life and chaotic career as a lab intern.
And on the Spidey side? You know there“s never rest for a superhero so long as crime abounds! When Spidey defeats Wilson Fisk early in the saga, a formidable gang of adversaries called the Inner Demons surfaces, taking up Fisk“s old turf. Spider-Man must defend the Big Apple against these nefarious forces through a series of surprising twists, including the reveal that the leader of the Inner Demons is actually Martin Li“s alter ego Mister Negative.
It“s rumored that other familiar Spider-Man characters to be featured in the game include Aunt May, Mary Jane Watson, Miles Morales, and Black Cat.
Clues into the gameplay experience indicate that Spider-Man will be controlled from a third-person perspective. Spidey“s famous web-slinging and wall-climbing stunts will be available to players, as well as the ability to slickly parkour around New York City. Both Mary Jane and an out-of-Spidey-costume Peter Parker are playable at crucial moments in the game“s storyline.
Development of Spider-Man has been in the works since at least early 2015, when Yuri Lowenthal was announced for the role of voicing Spidey. Capturing the real-life hustle and bustle of New York City and refining Spider-Man“s agile movement like never before were at the forefront of the game“s development mission.
A 2017 release date was initially hinted, but word came during Sony“s E3 Conference last year that the game wouldn“t hit shelves until 2018.
Jon Paquette, author of the Sunset Overdrive storyline, is the lead writer.
The promise of a brand new storyline and Spidey“s death-defying moves leaves us hotly anticipating September 7th.  Spider-Man has the potential to be a transcendental game for the franchise and one of the year“s best if it meets the pre-release hype. Since most things Marvel-created are pure gold, there“s every reason to believe this game will deliver.
