Spider-Man, No More. What Now?

We continue with the turbulent story about Spider-Man and the now apparent official “divorce” between Sony Pictures and Marvel/Disney,  as if it had been all about mini baccarat and they couldn’t handle the pressure of playing the game, in a previous article (you can read it here) I explained the difficult path of Spider-Man on his arrival to the theaters, and how Sony Pictures had the rights of the Friendly Neighborhood and why Sony Pictures must continue with the Disney/Marvel alliance.

The previous article was made before the announced and expected D23, many of us wanted to hear an miraculous announcement about that all things surrounding the “divorce” between Sony Pictures and Marvel/Disney were fixed and even the future of the arachnid was finally cleared, it was not so, I personally remained skeptical, it was very difficult that any settlement were reach in so few days, but hey! Some things were said about it, sadly for some it was that the divorce was confirmed (at least for now).

I’m going to dedicate this article to analyze the arguments of many defenders who see as positive the broken of the agreement between Sony Pictures and Dinsey/Marvel and why the future of Spider-Man looks shadowy once the bridges between Sony Pictures and Marvel are burned:

– Finally Spider-Man will be the independent Peter Parker who makes some right and wrong decisions and will take him on the path to being the hero we deserve! Maybe Marvel made the mistake of making Peter overly dependent on Tony Stark, almost beneath the Tony’s shadow, but you are forget some details: Peter before meeting Tony was already Spider-Man, Homecoming tells how things went before meeting Tony Stark and Peter was already the genius we all know, he made a suit, he was able to design some googles that allowed him to improve the functions of his first suit, Peter also created his famous spider web and made the web shooters and Tony did not influence anything of this, in Far From Home there was no longer Tony Stark and Peter alone had to face a difficult enemy like Mysterio, can we really say then that Holland’s Spider-Man had a strong dependence on Tony Stark? Are you sure about it?

– The Uncle Ben thing, many hated the fact of not seeing Uncle Ben pronouncing his famous phrase “with great power comes great responsibility” and then being killed by a criminal whom Peter could stop and he didn’t, this fact as well we know made Peter decide to dedicate his life to the fight against crime, in his debut at the MCU This important fact was completely ignored, I personally consider that it is indeed something that cannot be ignored in any Spider-Man movie, but because it was ignored does not necessarily mean that didn’t happened, the past of the Peter Parker played by Holland curiously remains in mystery, as we know in Homecoming there was an Aunt May and a Spider-Man so obviously was an Uncle Ben. It really was necessary to kill Uncle Ben again?

– Finally Sony Pictures can make the hyper and super blockbuster Spider-Verse live action movie with Tobey, Holland and Garfield that could include Venom and Carnage, wow, that is to dream big, in my previous article I talk about the history between Spider-Man and Sony Pictures and I mentioned some numbers about the previous adaptations, the trilogy of Raimi and the Reboot starring Garfield were all successful at the box office, but for Sony Pictures were risky adventures, the costs of each film were excessive leaving moderate earnings and the small but significant detail that each box office was in decline, therefore a Spider-Verse live action movie looks very ambitious for Sony Pictures and could even be risky, we also consider that some years must pass until something of this magnitude, others will say: Okay, the Spider-Verse is a very big bite for Sony Pictures right now, how about Maximum Carnage? That other formula could work, perhaps with this Sony Pictures dilemma is solved, but a few years must past before this and between each year and it should happen: The already announced sequel to Venom that will have as a villain Carnage, one or two Spider-Man films where Sony Pictures should explain: where Nick Fury went? Why Aunt May is not Marisa Tomei? Where did M.J (Michelle Jones) go? And who is M.J. (Mary Jane)? What happened to those funny friends of Peter from high school? How did Spider-Man stop being an Avenger? and my favorite: How the hell is Peter going to work at the Daily Bugle if Jameson already knows that he is Spider-Man? For something like Maximum Carnage, Sony Pictures must take several movies out of their sleeves directly related to Spider-Man and Venom, taking for granted two variables: The box office of Venom 2 and the box office of the eventual new Spider-Man movie with Holland.

Personally, I am concerned about this divorce and its sequels since the real loser is Spider-Man, thinking in cold blood: The MCU lived almost 10 years without Spider-Man, the MCU can easily exist without him and the way to a good Spider-Verse movie is shorter and easier if the alliance with Marvel/Disney continues, just imagine Hardy’s Venom and the rest of the Spider-Verse characters fully integrated into the MCU, that would be great! And finally the reactions of this divorce are leaving Sony Pictures like the true arch-enemy of Spidey.
