Staying Safe In The Online World
The internet has provided a wonderful way for people of all ages to relax and unwind, yet, there are risks associated with online gaming. As The New York Times outlines, many online gaming experiences are hunting grounds for malicious actors of all types, from predators to fraudsters. The anonymity that the web provides receives another layer of polish in multiplayer games, where an alternate identity is often chosen. Staying safe online will help to enjoy the first-hand experience of multiplayer games while safeguarding your long-term health and safety.
Stranger danger
One of the most important life lessons that children receive is to be wary around strangers. The vast majority of people do not have malicious intentions, yet, the small minority who do could cause serious harm. This risk is amplified by the darker sides of the web, where those who do want to act in a predatory fashion – financially or otherwise – have protections offered by modern tech. One Kaspersky blog highlights how hackers tried to steal one individual’s World of Warcraft account, but also noted the reality behind such attempts. When game accounts are compromised, that can lead to personal and financial data being stolen, too. Be judicious with the information you share – it’ll protect the integrity of your accounts and, perhaps, more detailed info, too.
Protecting yourself
Multiplayer games bring with them a good deal of toxicity. There’s always one player, amid others, who cannot help but flame when the game isn’t going well – or even if it is. According to the Washington Post, toxicity in online gaming remains a huge issue for gamers of all ages, and it can have serious impacts. Many gamers are people looking to escape the realities of life and find a bit of peace in playing their favorite titles online. Bullies can quickly shatter this and bring gamers back to reality. What’s the solution? Many titles have customizable content controls that will filter out language, and many others have forms of play where you restrict communications to trusted people. That’s a good idea to stay safe from harassment.
Gaming communities
One of the wonderful parts of online gaming is the huge communities that spring up around it. There are very few games where it’s impossible to find an experienced player or guide to help out, or a place to discuss spoilers and secrets. Unfortunately, as Forbes notes, many of these communities are facing existential crises. Discord is one of the most popular communication and community tools going, yet, it has faced accusations of inaction in the face of child groomers, ‘doxxers’ and hate communities. Again, the key is in restricting info when it comes to playing safe. Be careful online, don’t join communities where you feel unsafe, and report issues promptly.
When it comes down to it, staying safe online is a matter of protecting your identity. There are people who want to ruin the experience for others, or don’t know when they’re going too far in an argument or dispute. Keeping your distance can be achieved – you just need to be disciplined, and keep your data safe.
