“Wonder Woman 2 Coming soon – Everything we Know So Far “

by Maria H

When you bring back one of the greatest female superheroes of all time, you would expect nothing less absolute excellence. And honestly, Wonder Woman broke the ceiling when it comes to excellence. The movie starring Gal Gadot was one of the biggest hits of 2017.  It almost single handedly brought DC back from the brink. Now the question is, how do you follow up? It“s simple: you tell the next story of the Amazonian princess. A new Wonder Woman movie is already in the works and is expected to hit theaters on June 5, 2020.

Wonder Woman 1984

Patty Jenkins will again team up with Gal Gadot to bring the fierce yet kind Princess Diana to the screen in the new wonder woman movie titled Wonder Woman 1984. Surprisingly it is not going to be a sequel of the first Wonder Woman.

Patty Jenkins and the movie producer, Charles Roven have made it clear that this movie is the second to showcase the titular character from DC.

Patty Jenkins has stated on record that it is going to be in a different time frame. Although we will get a sense of what Diana/Wonder Woman has been up to in the intervening years, it“s a different story being told in the second installment.

Roven has also added that it will continue many similar aspects of Wonder Woman like emotions, humor and a heavy dose of action. But at the same time, it will do its bit in tugging at our heartstrings too.

Warner Bros chairman Toby Emmerich has also explained the reasons why Wonder Woman ”“ 1984 is not going to be a sequel. The primary factor is DC“s choice of moving away from a shared universe. Unlike their Marvel counterparts, DC wants to make it one movie at a time.

Obviously after the debacles of Batman Vs. Superman, Justice League and the stupendous success of Aquaman and Shazaam, this may be the best step forward for DC.

New Wonder Woman Movie: The Cast

After some initial hiccups with Gal Gadot is going to be back in the role of Wonder Woman. There was news that she had suggested that if Brett Ratner was still with the franchise, then she will not be returning.

Ratner had some serious sexual assault allegation made against him. But Warner Bros have clearly stated that Gal would return irrespective of Ratner“s role in the movie.

Chris Pine will also be returning too, but his role is still fodder for speculation. Especially after the fate of Captain Steve Trevor was sealed at the end of Wonder Woman, it will be interesting to see in what role and capacity does Chris Pine return in Wonder Woman ”“ 1984.

The most exciting news is the announcement by Patty Jenkins herself that Kirsten Wiig will be joining Wonder Woman ”“ 1984 as the main antagonist Cheetah. Wonder Woman comic book fans may remember that although Wiig“s character was first introduced in 1943, Cheetah arrived as Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva in 1987.

The Bridesmaids actor and writer could be the perfect villain for this iteration of Wonder Woman.

Pedro Pascal, from Game of Thrones, has also been signed for the new Wonder Woman movie. Much like Chris Pine, his role is still under wraps.

He may be playing Maxwell Lord who is instrumental in the formation of the Justice League, or he could be Zeus, Wonder Woman“s legendary father.

Behind The Scenes Team

After the success of Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins will return for the second movie too. Patty“s camaraderie with Gal and the reputation as a hard-working and creative director made it a no-brainer.

Patty told Entertainment Weekly . “It“s a beautiful story to tell and an important time to tell it and with people that I love.”“

Geoff Johns, the co-chairman of DC films will be working on the script. He confirmed it in an interview with Yahoo Movies.

Wonder Woman ”“ 1984: The Plot

The name makes it clear that the movie will be set in the 1980s. Patty Jenkins gave a sneak peek to the plot when she stated that the story would take place in the U.S. Since this is the story of Wonder Woman, she needs to come to America.

With the 1980s as the time frame most probably Wonder Woman may be up against the forces of the Soviet Union during the cold war era.

In a podcast, Jenkins said that it would again be a story based on the principles of love and truth. Wonder Woman has personified these virtues in all of her comic books and the first movie, and it seems apt that Jenkins is taking the story forward with the same theme.

After the production team held the flash card Wonder Woman II during the 2017 Comic-Con, it was expected to be the title of the new Wonder Woman movie. But instead, we will be getting Wonder Woman ”“ 1984.

Warner Bros has released a couple of photos from the movie. In one of them, Steve Trevor seems to be standing in a mall while the second is with Diana facing TV screens.

Later Patty Jenkins also tweeted Wiig as Dr. Minerva. It looks like the antagonist is in the midst of a room filled with animal-related objects. This sets her up to take over the mantle of Wonder Woman“s fiercest rivals in Cheetah.

Understanding the Timeline

Initially set to be released on December 13, 2019, the movie release has been pushed back to June 5, 2020. It is interesting that this movie is coming out in the same month as its 2017 predecessor. It was known later the studio wanted to use it as the big hit for 2019. But the success of A Star is Born, Crazy Rich Asians and stupendous performance of Aquaman and Shazaam made them change routes.

Irrespective of the reasons, Wonder Woman ”“ 1984 remains one of the most awaited movies of 2020.
